What is the difference between a “job” and a “career”? JOB: A piece of work, task, or duty done by agreement for pay Examples: Babysitting, Mowing Lawns, etc CAREER: A principle business, profession, occupation, or lifework. Examples: Banker, Mechanic, Teacher, etc Can a job be a career?

Career exploration focuses on three task: 1. Discovering what your aptitude, interests, abilities, and personal preferences are 2. Matching your aptitude, interests, abilities, and preferences with occupations 3. Learning where and how to get information on different careers Early exploration planning will help you develop YOUR strategy…. ……It’s never to early to start Three choices upon graduation: College/Tech School Work Force Military .

Career exploration: What do you already know about it? Three helpful sites to help you assess your potential in the job market ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery): Measures aptitudes for specific jobs types (Civilian & Military) MAPP (Motivational Appraisal of Personal Potential): Online career assessment test (FREE) Personal Nature Career Assessment Test: Measures talents and work styles; provides career suggestion (Fee)

All three will help you determine which jobs interest you the most; Traits and Qualities you may have for specific jobs Post graduation questions you should ask yourself: 1. Education or employment? (end of Sophomore year – mid Junior year) 2. Do I have the resources for post high school decision? 3. What do I need to do prior to graduation to prepare? 4. Will I be satisfied? .

After determining what your aptitudes, interests, abilities, and personal preferences are, explore your possible careers Techniques for this (7 – Step process): 1. Brainstorming: List all possible careers which interest you and select the ones you like the most (HINT: choose more than one) 2. Researching: Research the availability of selected possible careers. Many sources to help determine this (Pg. 155) Department of Labor (handbooks and web sites) Local Job Placement Services Yellow Pages Media (Newspaper, Radio and Television) State and Local government agencies (Chamber of Commerce) Trade Shows and Unions

3. Networking: Meeting people/making contacts – asking people about jobs/careers. People in that career field hear about job openings earlier (before public listings) 4. Canvassing: Talk with professionals in career field. Attend career days sponsored by multiple organizations. Learn requirements for entering that career. 5. Testing: Determines your aptitude to indicate your capability to learn a particular job/activity. Aptitude: capabilities you already have developed to indicate your readiness to become proficient in a certain activity. 6. Counseling: Guidance/Career counselors and Occupational Specialist in the schools and community. They can help match your aptitude to a career

Volunteering/Summer Jobs: Provides “hands-on” experience in the job environment to let you see the “ground truth” about the job. How Summer Jobs Help: Provides work experience Build responsibility Provides references for future jobs/careers Meet role model or a mentor to help plan your future Develops your interest and talents Helps you build your resume

Future Job Market (key areas) - Health Care: critical shortages of nurses - Education: requirements increase yearly - STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) See chart on page 159 Research the career - know what you are getting into before committing time and resources to a specific career. Look at the following: - What type of training/knowledge do you need to be hired? - What other skills would you need to learn? - Responsibilities with the job? Last year, more than 2,320 educators in the state retired, 6 out of 10 teachers leave the profession within 5 years.

Research the career – Con’t: - Working Conditions? - Opportunities for advancement? - Salary range? (Warning: watch averages) - Future outlook for this job? Does it remain viable? - What are other similar jobs? The more you know upfront, the more sound your decision will be
