Letters and Sounds In school, we follow the Letters and Sounds programme. Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills which consists of six phases. These phases teach the 44 sounds in the English language including alternative spellings.

How we teach phonics Short (20 minutes max but tends to be more like 15 in Year R) Active, energetic and systematic. Use games, props, puppets, lots of visuals. Taught in 4 clear parts We also teach letter formation as we work through the sounds. This is reinforced through shared writing.

4 part phonics lessons Revisit /review
Flashcards to practice phonemes learnt so far. Teach Teach new phoneme e.g. ch Practice Think of words together with the sound chick, chip, chop, chin, such/phoneme frames/countdown/buried treasure. Apply Read/write a sentence together (with puppet). The chick had chips and chops for tea.

Assessment Children are assessed continually through teaching and also at the end of each phase. Children may need to repeat a phase before moving on to ensure they are secure in their learning. Phonics continues to Year 3 and beyond for those children who need continued support. Year 1 –statutory phonics test.

What we will be sending home..
We will be sending home HFW lists to learn. Please help you children to learn these word as it will help their reading and writing immensely. Tricky words that can’t be sounded out will be highlighted.
