1 Critical-Thinking Skills
What does critical thinking have to do with ethics? Ethically appropriate actions are often in conflict with short-term personal gain. There is no ideal option in some cases. So, strong critical thinking skills can help you in difficult situations. Critical Thinking as: The process of evaluating a claim for the purpose of deciding whether to accept, reject, or perhaps suspend judgment about it [Damer] OR The ability and desire to ask the right questions in analyzing a situation [Browne and Keeley]

2 List of critical questions
What are the issues and the conclusions? What are the reasons? What words or phrases are ambiguous? What are the value conflicts and assumptions? What are the descriptive assumptions? What is the evidence? Are the sample representative and the measurements valid? Are there rival hypotheses? Are there flaws in the statistical reasoning? How relevant are the analogies? Are there errors in reasoning? What significant information is omitted? What conclusions are consistent with the strong reasons? What are my own value preferences in this controversy?

3 Arguments in the context of critical thinking
A argument is a line of reasoning presented with the intent to lead to a certain conclusion. Since premise1, and premise2,… Therefore conclusion What is a good argument? 1) Each premise should be true, 2) Each premise should be relevant to the issue at hand, 3) The collection of premises should be sufficient to establish that the conclusion is true.

4 Common Reasoning Fallacies
Errors arising from ambiguity Circular arguments that beg the question Use of unwarranted assumptions Fallacies involving missing evidence Incorrectly identified causation Premises irrelevant to the stated conclusion Appeal to emotion/loyalty/authority/… Diversion from the main point Incorrect deductive inference

5 Common Reasoning Fallacies
Since computer A has a 1.1 GHz Celeron processor and computer B has a 800 MHz G4 processor, computer A will run programs faster than computer B. What type of fallacy is illustrated in this argument?

10 Common Reasoning Fallacies
