1 SA Education Watch me first

2 System Automation Hands On Learning
Hands on Approach to learning SA fundamentals. Assume you know how to edit a PDB, Build, Load a configuration, and have a test system available. Does not require JCL or Programs/Procs to work. Since nothing is actually running, can’t cause any damage. Fast and easy to set up and experiment with. IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University

3 IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University
How it works Based on a Job Type of NONMVS APL and uses ACTIVMSG and TERMMSG to set APL status. Can be used to experiment with a almost anything. Examples include: Basic Group Server Group Relationships Pacing Gates IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University

4 IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University
Example Suppose you have 4 APL’s, and you need to start or stop them in a specific order due to dependencies. JOHNA_APL3 can only start when JOHNA_APL1 and JOHNA_APL2 are UP, and JOHN_APL4 can only start when JOHNA_AP3 is up. IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University

5 IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University
Example – continued Four APL’s would be created – JOHNA_APL1 – JOHNA_APL4 There are several kinds of relationships and we want to see how they work. We are going to use HASPARENT for this example. Define the relationships starting at JOHNA_APL4 and work up the chain. Build, Load the Control File and use INGLIST to see how things work. IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University

6 IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University
Example – continued Use INGLIST to STOP the APG containing the APL’s and see how the HASPARENT relationship works. IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University

7 IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University
Example – continued If the relationships are created correctly, we would expect to see JOHNA_APL4 stop, then JOHNA_APL3 and then JOHNA_APL2 and JOHNA_APL1 at the same time. We see JOHNA_APL4 stopping IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University

8 IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University
Example – continued Then once JOHNA_APL4 is stopped, we see JOHNA_APL3 stopping. Notice that JOHNA_APL1 and JOHNA_APL2 are still in Available status. IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University

9 IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University
Example – continued JOHNA_APL3 is now down and we see JOHNA_APL1 and JOHNA_APL2 begin termination IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University

10 IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University
Example – completed And finally all APL’s are down and the Group is down. All of this was done without JCL or programs. IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University

Getting Started Getting started is as easy as watching three videos: Creating APL’s Creating an APL Class Creating an APG One you master this, you are ready to start experimenting! IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University

12 IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University
Final Word I strongly suggest that you view the first three video’s to understand how to set things up. The links are in the text box below this video. Next view the SA Education videos that demonstrate various features or functions and give it a try. All of these videos are identified with IBMzOSSAEducation. You can search this channel for the tag to find them. Give it a try! Feel free to experiment and see how things work!! IBM z/OS Automation and Monitoring University
