1 SEAMANSHIP Personal Safety
Safe lifting practices must be followed. Never wear rings as they may snag on broken strands. Long hair should be tied back. Loose clothing, such as ties should be removed. Necklaces should also be removed. Gloves are not good to wear as they can wrap around the rope and get caught. Hard hats must be worn if load is raised more than two metres. Phase Three OHP #1

2 SEAMANSHIP Group Safety
Ensure there is one person in charge of the exercise and everyone knows how it is. Ensure all personnel who are handling lines and loads are in a safe working area. Never stand within a bight or a coil. Also, never stand directly in the line of recoil of a rope. If possible, assign one person to act solely as a safety observer. Phase Three OHP #2

3 SEAMANSHIP Equipment Safety
Inspect the tackle and load before it is lifted to ensure there are no defects in the rope or equipment that could break and cause an accident. Attachments should be checked carefully to ensure they are secure. Ensure the tackle is rigged properly and safely secured. Ensure no one is standing below an object that is being hoisted or lowered. Phase Three OHP # 3
