States of Consciousness Unit 3
Sleep States of Consciousness Unit 3
2
Objectives Define and apply circadian cycles to life.
Determine the characteristics of the stages of sleep as well as the order in which they occur. Distinguish the various sleep disorders by characteristics, symptoms, causes and effects
3
General Information We sleep 1/3 of our lives No one knows exactly why we need sleep, but we do know All species sleep Sleep seems to restore our energy We are more even tempered and mentally healthy when rested
4
Circadian Cycles Regardless of environment, our bodies function in 24 hour cycles This is most noticeable when traveling through multiple time zones or working swing shifts Its difficult to readjust to a new time schedule
5
The Rhythms of Sleep Sleep has 5 stages, which repeat every 90 minutes of sleep ( REM 1…) Everyone has different sleep requirements, but generally: children and young adults need the most sleep, adults need 6-8 hours, and the elderly can often sleep 4 hours
6
Characteristics of the Stages
Stage 1: slow pulse, muscle relaxation, eyes roll gently, sleep is light and sleeper may not even know they slept Stages 2 & 3: progressively deeper sleep, heart rate, breathing, and temperature drop, delta waves increase, and sleeper doesn’t respond to noises or light
7
Stage 4: slow delta waves, heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and temperature are as low as they will get Comes in min increments REM: rapid eye movement, most dreams, increase in heart rate, breathing, blood pressure and temp Deepest sleep; 25% of your sleep is in REM
8
Sleep Disorders Sleepwalking/talking: occurs during stage 4; most common in children; more common in boys Night terrors: happen most in children 4-12; cause violent screaming and thrashing; can never be recalled upon waking These have been correlated to adults w/ personality disorders, drug/alcohol addictions, and epilepsy
9
Insomnia: temporary inability to sleep or stay asleep; often caused by stress
Apnea: breathing difficulty and snoring during sleep; causes depression, sexual dysfunction, difficulty concentrating, and headaches; most common in middle aged overweight males
10
Narcolepsy: believed to arise from a defect of the central nervous system; causes immediate entry to REM from waking consciousness as well as hallucinations Cataplexy: affects narcoleptics; hearing and awareness are normal, but muscles slacken (sometimes to the point of total collapse), vision is blurred, and speech is slurred Triggered by strong emotions

What terminology is best associated with jet leg?
Exit Ticket What terminology is best associated with jet leg? Write the stages of sleep in order, then list the characteristics of each stage Briefly describe the symptoms of: sleepwalking/talking, night terrors, insomnia, apnea, narcolepsy, and cataplexy
