Comprehension Conflict
The cattle get out and start to eat and trample the hay-stacks. Plot Events The cattle are big, scary, and dangerous, and the girls are scared. There family is not around to help them. Review the anchor charts created while reading in small group. Use this out line to review the story. Resolution Laura shakes a stick at the leas cow, Jack barks at them, and they drive the cows away.

Plot Events Ben looks for Elsie in all of her favorite places. He doesn’t find her. He decides to look in the barn. Resolution Ben finds Elsie in the barn and learns she has had kittens.

attentive If someone is attentive, that person is carefully listening to or watching something. What made Laura and jack so attentive in the afternoon?

pounced A person or animal that pounced on something jumped on it eagerly in order to take it. Why do you think Laura pounced on what Pa had in his pocket?

contradicting Contradicting someone is saying that what the person has said is wrong. Do you think Laura was contradicting what Pa said about the cattle? Explain.

Spelling consonant -le

Prefixes, Suffixes, And Roots
A root is the basic part of a word and gives the word its meaning. A root that can stand on its own is called a root word. A prefix is a word part that is added to the beginning of the root word. A suffix is a word part that is added to the end of a root.
