Bell Work (9/30) Movement vs. Migration?
Iraqi people flee the war and relocate to America. You ride the bus to OHS every day. Slaves were sent from Africa to the New World. Your grandparents go to Florida every winter. You join the peace corps and live in Uganda for 2 years. You go to camp in Wisconsin every summer. Your parents leave Chicago to raise a family in the burbs. People transfer from Illinois to the Sunbelt looking for jobs. People come to America looking for a better life and send money home to their families. Objective: Compare and contrast types of movement and migration. Identify Ravenstein’s Laws of Migration

Predict… How are these different? Types of Movement Cyclic Movement
vs. Periodic Movement Migration Types of Migration International Internal Interregional Intraregional Forced Voluntary
3
Types of Movement Cyclic Movement – movement away from home for a short period Commuting Seasonal movement Nomadism Periodic Movement – movement away from home for a longer period of time Migrant Labor Transhumance Military Service Migratory Movement – a permanent move to a new location

Back to the Bell Work Which are cyclic movement?
Which are periodic movement? Which are migratory movement?

6
Types of Migration International Internal From one country to another
Interregional – between regions Intraregional – within a region – more common Immigration vs. Emigration? Net Migration is calculated by the difference between the number of immigrants and the number of emigrants.
7
Types of Migration Voluntary Forced Relocation by choice Examples?
Relocation by others’ choice Compelled to move especially by political or environmental factors Examples? Not always a clear-cut distinction – those migrating for economic reasons may feel forced by pressure inside themselves to migrate, such as to search for food or jobs but are not explicitly being forced to move by the violent actions of other people
8
Forced or voluntary?
9
Amistad Clip What hardships did slaves encounter during the Middle Passage? Can you think of other examples of forced migration throughout history?
10
Ravenstein’s Laws of Migration
Laws are organized into 3 groups The distance people move The reasons people move Characteristics of migrants
11
Distance people move Most migrants move a short distance
Long distance international migrants head for major centers of economic activity Most migrations proceed in steps
12
The reasons people move
Most people migrate for economic reasons Cultural and environmental factors also induce migration, although not as frequently as economic factors Every migration generates a return or counter migration
13
Characteristics of migrants
Most long-distance migrants are male (But females are more migratory) Most long-distance migrants are adult individuals rather than families with children Urban residents are less migratory than inhabitants of rural areas
14
Link to the DTM What type of migration would you find in each stage?
Permanent Migration not likely (periodic/cyclic likely) International emigration and interregional (tech pushes off farm and into urban factory) International immigration. Destinations for stage 2. Most internal (intraregional) will be city to suburbs. Same as 3. May include counterurbanization.
