Course code: 722G23 7,5 ECTS credits/HP – Spring semester 2008 Course homepage: LiU School of Managment and Engineering Department of Management and Engineering Peter Gustavsson, Ph D

Introduction The introduction of the course will be held the 21th of January Enclosed you will find a rough idea of the course design for the first course, "The processes view on Management". The course are structured in two lines: a general view and a more specific "Scandinavian" part. At the introduction you will get an idea about the content of the courses and about the schedule. The course will in some way be integrated with the following course in Leadership and Culture even if we must split them into two blocks. In the course we will find students from Sweden as well as international students.

Pedagogic idea An average week will consist of lectures and workshops, seminars or case discussions. The pedagogic idea is that you as a student is responsible for your own learning process, which implies that there will be a lot of independent search for additional reading material and writing of reports in the course. For a major part of the week, you will be working in a group. Apart from the course objective, and the fact that you will also acquire training in working in groups, in preparing material for external presentations, you will also improve your skills in how to make presentations in front of an audience, to give and to receive comments of presented work. All, which is likely to be normal activities in your future careers.

Themes in the course During the following 5 weeks the studies will be divided in themes. At the end of each week we will summarise the work and through presentations and discussions of the students projects. Theme1: Structure and Internationalization. Theme2: Business idea and Strategy. Theme3: What does the field look like? Theme4: Scouting for new trends! Theme5: Applications of what has been learnt! For each seminar there will be a guideline that relates to the specific topic.

Seminar reports The seminar reports are expected to cover the following aspects: 1. Background - in which a discussion of the relevance of the project is presented. Why is the project of interest, and to whom? I.e. you should point out the motives of why the questions you have chosen do penetrate have been raised in your report. 2. The problem and the purpose. The purpose should be formulated in such a form that it will be possible for the reader to assess whether the objectives of the project have been achieved or not. 3. In the empirical part of the report, you will relate to the frame of reference that you have chosen. You will look for indications that relate to you fame of reference and if you find a correspondence, then you will discuss why and how. If you find a discrepancy, then you will also discuss why and how this is so. 4. In the conclusive section you can discuss what you have learnt related to a variety of aspects; e.g. - the theoretical issues (the frame of reference) - the empirical findings (what you have found interesting and/or significant) - the methodological approach, i.e. what can be learnt from the way the study has been conducted. This part should be characterised by a reflective approach on what you have done in the project.

Grading The grading is based on group work as well as individual work. The 1st, 2nd, and 4th seminar are 10 per cent each of the final grade, the 3rd and 5th seminar are 20 per cent each of the final grade. Finally the exam at the 23th February, 2007 covers the rest (30 per cent).

Course literature The course literature is, to a certain extent provided through the seminar projects along with some literature that has been used at lectures in the course. The teams are required to select literature (articles) that is not initially included in list of the course literature which you will find in the library link.
