1 Good if: you can explain what is meant by ultrasound.
Learning Objective To understand ideas about ultrasound frequencies. Learning Outcome To be able to explain what ultrasound is and give some uses. Success Criteria Good if: you can explain what is meant by ultrasound. Excellent when: you can give examples of ultrasound frequencies. Exceptional if: you can give some examples of uses of ultrasound.

2 Ultrasound Scans In order to see unborn babies an ultrasound wave with a frequency between 2 and 10 Mhz is produced and transmitted into the mother. The wave is partially reflected when it meets a boundary between two different media. These reflections are collected and interpreted as a picture on a screen.

3 Ultrasound Cleaning Dogs, bats and mice can hear ultrasound (frequencies above 20,000 Hz). Ultrasonic cleaners use frequencies in the 20 to 40kHz range to clean delicate equipment or jewellery. The technique relies on microscopic cavitation events which shake the dirt off.

4 Ultrasound Communication
Dogs, bats and mice can hear ultrasound (frequencies above 20,000 Hz). Animals also have other uses for ultrasound:

5 SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging
Dolphins and submarines use ultrasound frequencies underwater to communicate and navigate. An ultrasound pulse is made and depending on how quickly it comes back you can work out how far away you are.

6 Industrial Ultrasound
The same frequency of between 2 and 10 Mhz is also used to perform non destructive tests (NDT’s) on metal casings and pipes.

7 Ultrasound Electronic systems can produce electrical oscillations with any frequency. These oscillations can be used to produce ultrasound waves. These waves have a frequency higher than the upper limit of human hearing. These waves can be used for industrial cleaning and non destructive testing of materials. They are most well known for their use in scanning unborn babies. The waves are partially reflected when they meet a boundary between two different media. The time taken for these pulses to reach the detector is a measure of how far away the boundary is, This can then be shown as a visual display.

8 Ultrasound Electrical systems can be used to make sounds higher than the range of human hearing (20 hertz to 20,000 Hertz). These signals are called ultrasound. They can be used for: Scanning unborn babies Cleaning delicate instruments Finding objects under water (SONAR)
