1 Anatomy Safety

2 Chemical concerns Preservative—if get it on you, rinse it off, wash with soap, rinse again- -This is not going to happen because you will be wearing gloves and glasses Other chemicals—follow teacher’s safety cautions and use appropriate gloves, goggles, aprons as directed Know the location and proper use of the safety shower and eye wash station Stand under shower for 15 minutes Hold eyes open in eyewash for 15 minutes

3 Dissection concerns-sharps
Scalpel use Always cut away from yourself and your lab partners Use scissors instead of scalpel whenever possible If your scalpel gets broken or dull, it goes in the broken glass/sharps container

4 Dissection concerns—personal protection
Gloves—should be worn at all times—your group is responsible for keeping yourselves stocked in gloves—use non-latex gloves if allergy is a problem Safety glasses—you must wear safety glasses at all times—you may wear chemical splash goggles if you prefer (or when we are doing lab other than dissection) Aprons or an oversized T shirt should be worn to protect your clothing Long hair must be tied back and up No id on, long necklaces etc

5 Dissection concerns—most likely to happen
Tissue gets dislodged and ends up somewhere Cat body fluids leak or squirt out Scalpel cut If there is ANY incident, let the teacher know immediately. Fill out an accident report form if requested.

6 Disposal of body parts Any tissues or organs removed from cat must be wrapped in a paper towel and put into the “body bag” designated by the teacher NO BODY PARTS MAY LEAVE THE ROOM

7 Clean up At the end of the dissection period, follow the procedure for storing the cat Wash the dissecting equipment and THOROUGHLY DRY it. The equipment will rust easily if even one drop of water is left on it (or in the dissection kit). Open the scissors and make sure the area near the hinge is dry Wash the dissecting tray with soap and water and rinse Squirt a small line of chlorox solution onto the dissecting tray, wipe it down, rinse and dry—return to storage area

8 Clean up continued Squirt a squiggly line of chlorox solution down your lab table and wipe it down to disinfect the table surface Then—take off your gloves as demonstrated by the teacher Last to come off are safety glasses and aprons
