E-MAIL Initially called the computer-based messaging system
Renamed “electronic mail”: . Allows immediate communication between receiver and sender provided they have internet . Combines characteristics of writing and speaking Has the advantages to compose and revise written messages. Saves time printing, copying and distributing messages.

communication: (i) reach individuals or groups, share files and data, video, music and anything that can be stored electronically. (ii) useful for both personal or formal communication. (iii) communication can be maintained with family, friends anywhere in the world.

Writing conventions for emails still developing.
Disregard for the formalities– as most people have individual accounts, becomes personal to some extent. Basic grammar and punctuation- not observed in personal s. Communication can use informal approach. Use of basic grammar & punctuation - a reflection of sender’s abilities in a formal setting.

Spontaneous nature in receiving and replying to s as well as conversational and informal tone has caused people to compose messages without keeping an eye for structure, grammar and content. This should be avoided especially in formal communication.

Etiquette Due to the conversational aspect of s - watch tone used. Do not be too informal. Be concise. Avoid long, rambling (wordy) messages. Send message only when absolutely essential. Forward mails only when appropriate and only to relevant people. Some people do not have the time. Be polite especially in a formal situation. Maintain this even in an informal situation.

Use short greeting to acknowledge the recipient of your Avoid capitalization - denotes a person screaming. Avoid emoticons especially if you are not too familiar with the moods of the receiver. Include a closing by letting the reader know you have finished - include a closing and signature. Retain the thread by including previous messages and add your response to the top. That way, the recipient is privy to all the information that you already have.
