The most commonly cultivated strawberry, Fragaria ananassa, is an octoploid with eight sets of chromosomes.
This makes it a good candidate for demonstrating DNA extraction - with eight copies of each gene in the strawberry genome, strawberries are packed full of it.

The salt in the extraction buffer helps separate the DNA from the Proteins and RNA at the bottom of the test tube.
DNA is soluble in water, but is insoluble (does not dissolve) in alcohol!

Between the two layers you will see the DNA precipitate (when a solid forms from two liquids) out of solution and float to the top. You may spool the DNA on your glass rod .You should see strands of DNA winding around the DNA.
