Future Truck Design Awards is a new competition for students, seeking innovative ideas for the design of the safe urban truck of the future

A NEW DESIGN AWARDS We’re searching for the truck designer of the future Have you got what it takes? We’re seeking ideas from academia for the safe city truck of the future It’s open to any student (or recent graduate) and the focus is on innovation and creativity There are three categories for this age group Whole vehicle design Safety feature Transport system

WHY STUDENTS? Restrictive regulations and focus on cost of manufacturer inevitably restricts innovation Seeking break-through ideas from a fresh perspective Putting safety at the source of future transport design You’ve heard about the issues associated with increased urbanisation and the challenges this brings to the transport supply chain The city can’t function without the delivery of goods and services and everyone involved in the logistics supply chain is focused on dealing with the challenges We need some breakthrough thinking to move the discussion forward

WHO CAN ENTER? The Future Truck Design Awards are open to students studying 18-plus years: Undergraduate or postgraduate level (or recently graduated) 16-18 years: College and Sixth Form students at Key Stage 5 14-16 years: GCSE school students at Key Stage 4 If you know students who might be interested please get in touch

HOW TO ENTER All the entries should be submitted via the Awards website Documents must be submitted in PDF format with a maximum file size of 10Mb The entries should consists of a short introductory text submission (maximum 500 words) along with five A3-size sheets covering Problem analysis/research Concept development In context storyboards Design details Final presentation visuals School entry requirements are slightly simpler

THE JUDGES LINE-UP An expert panel from the truck industry
Truck designers Truck operators Experts from the road safety sector All the entries will be reviewed and a judging process will determine the winner The winners will be announced at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham on 26 April Your designs will be judged by people who are involved at the sharp end of vehicle design and operation The Competition judges will be looking for the entrant to demonstrate An understanding of the brief How their design will impact on road safety Creativity Innovation Potential for the design to be applied to real life conditions

THE PRIZES Overall winners will have the opportunity to work alongside truck designers at Mercedes-Benz and Volvo Trucks The category winners will win £1000 along with a trophy to mark the success. Highly commended entries will also win cash prizes All the shortlisted designs will be displayed for the truck industry and public to see: National Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC in Birmingham next April The Motor Transport Industry Awards in July at the Grosvenor Hotel Park Lane Be displayed at the Transport Museum in Covent Garden
