1 Monday, November 28th Entry Task Open your textbook to page 498. Explain how wavelength, frequency, and amplitude measured in a longitudinal wave. Schedule: Chapter 15 review Objective: I know and understand the concepts of Chapter 15, Waves Homework Study for your quiz Organize your ISN Please have on desk: ISN, entry task brochure

2 Tuesday, November 29th Entry Task What can happen to the energy in two waves when they meet? Schedule: Chapter 15 quiz 16.1 Vocabulary Objective: I will demonstrate my understanding of Chapter 15, Waves Homework: Complete the 16.1 vocab Please have on desk: ISN open to Chapter 15 review & crossword

3 Wednesday, November 30th Entry Task Explain what a mechanical wave is.
Schedule: 16.1 Sound is a wave Objective: I will explain how sound waves are produced and detected. Homework 16.1 RSG Please have on Desk: Pencil and entry task brochure

4 Read 16.1. Take notes on the following:
How sound waves transfer energy. How sound is detected by humans. What determines how fast sound travels.

5 Thursday, December 1st Entry Task Why is this scout doing this? Use what you know about the speed of sound in different mediums in your answer. Schedule: 16.1 Sound is a wave Objective: I will explore how sound travels through a medium Homework: Activity questions if not finished in class Please have on desk: ISN open to 16.1 notes and RSG, entry task brochure

6 Do you know…… What is necessary for sound waves to be produced by an object?(518 and/or 520) How sound waves travels from one place to another?(520) How sound waves are detected by humans?(519) How the type and temp. of medium affects the speed of sound waves?( )

7 Sound waves are a result of Vibrations

8 Sound is a mechanical wave – it needs matter to travel through
Sound can travel through solids, liquids and gases Sound CAN’T travel through a vacuum (area with no/few particles)

9

10

11 Sound waves are detected by the ear. The ear has 3 regions:
Outer Ear – Gathers and funnels the sound wave Middle Ear – Transfers the vibrations Inner Ear – Converts vibrations to electrical signals

12 Sound travels fastest in solids
Particles are closer together in solids Particles don’t have too far to travel to transfer their energy

13 Sound travels faster in warmer materials.
Particles are moving faster in warmer materials Particles have more energy to transfer

14 Friday, December 2nd Entry Task Can sound travel through all states of matter (solid, liquid, gas)? Provide evidence to support your answer. Schedule: Intro to Frequency and Pitch Objective: I will explain how the frequency of a wave is related to the pitch of a sound Homework 16.2 RSG Please have on desk: ISN and entry task brochure

15 Every Sound is a Present Write each question in comp. book
What is the purpose of a cochlear implant? What is the energy transfer that occurs in an ear when we hear? What is the purpose of the microphone on the external portion of the cochlear implant? Will the sounds Kelly hears be like the sounds detected by a person with normal hearing? Explain

16 Every Sound is a Present
A cochlear implant allows people with damaged a cochlea to hear. Takes the place of hair cells that are missing. Sound energy is turned into electrical energy inside the normal ear. The microphone picks up the sounds from outside the ear and transmits them to the computer The sounds will not be the same because they are made by a computer with electrodes instead of a healthy cochlea.
