Nanoscience By Alice Smith and Rebecca Layzell

2 Cosmetics Nanotechnology and
nanomaterials are found in cosmetics in different forms. Nanoparticles are useful UV filters using titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Examples of cosmetics that use or plan to use nanotechnology: L'Oreal- used in anti-wrinkle cream. Procter and gambles Olay. Hair products- to encapsulate active ingredients and carry them deeper into hair shafts.

3 Clothing Nanoscience is used in textiles to produces special properties within the clothing. One example is ‘the lotus effect’ This involves using the leaves of the lotus plant because it has special qualities which allow it to repel water and other substance, allowing it to be stain and water resistant. Silver nanoparticles are being included in many fabrics as it has antibacterial properties stopping smelly odours and much more.

4 sport Used in sports to allow for lighter, stronger and more durable equipment. Footballers wear shin pads which are no lighter and have nano-structured plastics to make it more effective. Tennis players may own nano-enhanced rackets which have nanotubes in them making them extremely strong and light. This making it easier for player to improve performance.

5 Health

6 Military There are many plans for nanotechnology in the military, some very dangerous. One concept is the nano-bomb. This contains a self engineered multiplying deadly virus that can continue to wipe out communities, countries etc. Nano-bots are another not yet created theory which could be extremely useful within the military but also very dangerous. Nano-sensors are also another plan which could be used to detect the slightest of movements which could be completely undetectable.
