1 What is it? How do we use it?
Scientific Method What is it? How do we use it?

2 Scientific Method The basic steps used by scientist in solving problems and uncovering facts.

3 Steps of the Scientific Method
Step 1: Identify the problem - What question are you trying to find an answer to? In the form of a question. Ex. Why do Joshua Trees not grow closer to Vegas?

4 Steps of the Scientific Method
Step 2- Gather Information Look up information at the library or ask an expert. Think about the experiences that you have had that will help you find the answer. Ex. Climate, laws, etc.

5 Steps of the Scientific Method
Step 3- state a hypothesis What do you think the answer to the problem might be? Ex. Do Joshua Trees only grow at certain elevations?

6 Steps of the Scientific Method
Step 4- Do an EXPERIMENT. In order to find the answer to a problem, scientists do an experiment. NOTE: only one thing at a time can be changed in an experiment. Ex. Grow a Joshua Tree in an environment with a lot of water and one with out.

7 Steps of the Scientific Method
The Variable is the thing that is changed in an experiment. All of the groups are the same in the experiment except for this. Independent Variable- This is the thing that you change. (X axis)

8 Steps of the Scientific Method
Dependent Variable- This is the thing that changes in response to what you changed. (Y axis)  Control- variables in the experiment that do not change. They are kept the same in every part of the experiment.

9 Steps of the Scientific Method
Step 5- RECORD the results that you got from your experiment. - Collect DATA. Data is defined as recorded observations and measurements. Usually a chart or a graph is used to display data from an experiment.

10 Steps of the Scientific Method
Step 6-State your conclusion Your conclusion is based on the results of the data you collected about your experiment. Your conclusion tells you whether or not your hypothesis is right or wrong.

11 Steps of the Scientific Method
Step 7- Retest If results do not support your hypothesis then retest your experiment using a different variable.
