1 ‘Football Culture & Architecture’
Daniel Friell (u )

2 My Project (a brief outline)
Football culture/architecture in a supercity (London) Show what football means to people BUT ALSO the difference in architecture, i.e. the stadiums

3 Initial Ideas Two Proposals 1st Proposal
‘Financial Table vs League Table’ Higher League = Better Stadium facilities High income vs Low income Comparative! 2nd Proposal Football culture of England Focus on match day crowds and atmosphere Highlight things that might not be ‘appreciated’ as much, i.e. scarves, shirts, etc.

4 The Research What things do I need to look into? Teams within London
Fixtures Accessibility to locations Any (similar) existing work

5 Research (cont.) Google Maps view of football stadiums in London
What I found out: 14 accessible stadiums in London Article by Glenn Moore (independent.co.uk, 2015) ‘London is in the middle of a stadium boom that can make it the world capital of football’ Present day ‘lust’ for more capacity “Football is booming and London’s economy is growing again. In addition English football, especially the Premier League, is now a tourist destination in its own right, with London clubs, because of their location, the chief beneficiaries.” (2015) Google Maps view of football stadiums in London Article available at:

6 Existing Work David Shields Has a portfolio of his work online
Specific inspiration was his project ‘Football Stadiums – 21st Century Cathedrals’ Takes photos of various parts of football stadiums across the world. A different way of appreciating football culture; without the stadium, what is the football club? Available at:

7 Existing Work (Cont.) Mark Pain
“multi award winning sports photographer with over 25 years experience and international recognition.” Showed really nice variation in the photos that he published online Use of shadow, depth and focus served as main inspiration. Available at:

8 Problems Encountered ‘1st day of shooting’ cancelled due to heavy rain
Plans were to photograph Wembley Stadium Conditions were far too awful! Ended up rescheduling on a better day Some initial photo ideas were no longer available to me ‘Models’ required for shoot were unavailable Some planned shots were therefore scrapped Proposal needed to be altered Wasn’t able to shoot on a match day at one location Only had one home fixture Couldn’t gain access to the ground without ticket Had to arrange a day to shoot with management at the ground (not on a match day)
