What are grid references, how do they help us find places? To be successful you need to… Be able to find places and map symbols using grid references (4 figure)

A GRID REFERENCE is a number which gives a location on a map
We can use them to find out where something is … ...or if we get lost we can tell someone where we are.

Grid references There are two main types of grid references:
• Four-Figure – Those indicates a single km square on a map • Six-Figure – This indicates a point within a square

The numbers at the bottom are called Eastings because they show you how far East you are.

Each Easting refers to the column which is to the East of its line.

The numbers at the side are called Northings because they show you how far North you are.

Each Northing refers to the row North its line.

We always read the Easting First and the Northing Second
You can remember this by thinking… E comes before N in the Alphabet
