1 AREA & GRID REFERENCING
Lesson objectives; To develop a greater understanding of how to read maps using area & grid references. To develop a greater understanding of how to be more accurate with locating places. SUCCESS CRITERIA To be able to apply 4 & 6 figure grid references to find places on a map

2 FINDING LOCATIONS ON A MAP
Most maps use a system of numbers or letters or both around the borders to help us find places. You must go along the grid and then up to locate an area correctly Handy hint: ‘go along the corridor, then up the stairs) The vertical lines are called EASTINGS as they divide up the map from west to east They increase in value as you travel east on a map The horizontal lines are called NORTHINGS as they divide up a map from south to north They increase in value as you travel north on a map Eastings are always used and written first before northings

3 AREA REFERENCE A 4-figure map reference is an AREA reference (AR)
It describes the general location of an area on the map The first two numbers of an area reference refers to the easting grid line and refer to the line on the left side of the grid sqaure eastings are numbered at the bottom or top of the map The second two numbers in an area reference refers to the northing grid line and refer to the line at the bottom of the grid Northings are numbered along the side of the map An area reference is written without spaces or a comma, e.g. AR2334 (find it on the map)

4 AREA REFERENCE The golden rule
Copy the shapes into your books and write down their 4-figure area reference. 04 05 06 07 08 09 23 24 25 26 27 The golden rule ‘Along the corridor and then up the stairs’

5 GRID REFERENCES 6-figure grid references are more precise than a 4-figure area reference Grid references are used to locate smaller, more specific locations A 6-figure grid reference divides the grid square up into ten sections along the bottom and the side The first 3 numbers of a grid reference refer to the eastings To find the exact location, the first two numbers refer to the grid line and the third number is the specific space within the grid square If the grid line is below 10, you must put a zero in front to make it two numbers e.g. 09…and then add the third number The last 3 numbers of a grid reference refer to the northing grid line Same applies as above PRACTISE USING THIS MAP

6 MORE PRACTISE – AR & GR REFERENCES
Find the AR and GR for each symbol 04 05 06 07 08 09 23 24 25 26 27

7 Why do we use 6 figure grid references?
To be able to recall how to work out 6 figure grid references and why they are important. Why do we use 6 figure grid references? Task; Complete the following sentence We use a 6 figure grid reference because ……………………………………………………………………………………………… 2) 6 figure grid references are better than 4 figure grid references because. 3) We work out 6 figure grid references by

8 To be able to indentify how to work out six figure grid references
Practise… To be able to indentify how to work out six figure grid references

9 Which is the correct grid reference?
To be able to apply six figure grid references to find places on a map Which is the correct grid reference? 1. The tunnel. b) 2. The school b)323468 3. The lodge farm b) 4. Fredley manor b)323447 5. Cowslip farm b)312451
