2 Why do we teach French at primary school?
‘Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.’ (National Curriculum)

3 What is expected? listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures

4 What is expected? develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language

5 What is expected? broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied (feminine and masculine forms, conjugation of high frequency verbs, key features and patterns of language)

6 Who teaches French at Harry Gosling?
Tutor A native French tutor, Zohra, comes into school to teach years 3, 4, 5 and 6. They have 30 minute lessons once a week.

7 Who teaches French at Harry Gosling?
Class teachers Teachers play an active role in French lessons and model good language learning. French is embedded throughout the school in everyday routine, and staff have a ‘phrase of the week’ to use in classrooms.

Oral rehearsal and repetition Quel age as-tu? Ҫa va? As-tu des freres ou des soeurs? Ou habites-tu?

Introducing new vocabulary and rehearsing aloud partner talk vocabulary games matching words and pictures

10 What do French lessons at Harry Gosling look like?
Written work Children write sentences independently using the model given. They work up to an extended piece of writing in year 6, which will prepare them for year 7 language lessons.

11 Bastille Day On 14th July, Harry Gosling will be celebrating the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, which signified the start of the French Revolution. Children will learn about French history and culture in topic lessons. We will have an assembly in the morning where children from KS2 will showcase what they have been learning in French. Classes will enjoy a French picnic!

12 How can you help at home? Talk to your child about what they have been learning in French. If you don’t know any French, ask them to teach you some phrases! online games and videos
