Document formatting = overall appearance Margin Color & style Organization (examples: outlines, lists) Can access formatting by: Buttons on Formatting toolbar Command from menu bar Keyboard shortcuts1

2 Formatting Characters
Change appearance of words (examples: italics, bold, underline) FONT: a unique design of a set of characters. Default font for Word: Times New Roman 2 categories of fonts: Serif fonts have tiny projections “feet” example: Times New Roman Sans serif fonts are straight lines without decorative lines example: Arial

3 Formatting Paragraphs
Line spacing Indents Tabs Borders Shading Affects all lines in a paragraph

4 Line Spacing Single Space (hit Enter one time)
Result: no line spaces between lines Double Space (hit Enter twice) Result: one line space between lines Triple Space (hit Enter three times) Result: two line spaces between lines

5 Formatting Pages Margins – distances from edge of paper to text
Page orientation Applies to individual pages

6 Memos Memo: an informal communication.
Used to pass info quickly to others, usually in same organization Heading: To: the person receiving the memo From: the person sending the memo Date: date memo was sent Re: the subject of the memo Body: the info being distributed No salutation or closing Sometimes writer’s initials at end

7 Templates A preset layout with placeholders to position text and graphics Included in Word to help create documents quickly.
