Research Report: Culture- Names & Immigration
Naming practices vary widely among cultures. For example, in many Asian countries, the family name (surname) comes before the personal (first) name. Asian immigrants also have faced the dilemma of whether to give their children Asian or English personal names. Asian names preserve tradition, but English names may be a cultural advantage in the United States. Many immigrants from Russia, Poland, Italy, and Ireland had the spellings of their family names changed when they passed through Ellis Island, often because immigration officials could not spell long names properly. Find out if your family names have changed over time and write a one page report with MLA format. Be sure to include a proper title. This report is due Tuesday, May 29th (those students going on the field trip to Ronald Regan Library, you must turn in report prior to leaving!)
