FEPA Jury Seminar for Thematic Philately Essen 2013

2 How to evaluate Thematic Development
1 TITLE Plan page Story line 3 Story line 2 Pag. 2 Title & Plan, and Development are components of the main criterion named Treatment. Pag. n

3 Story line – detailed view at page level

4 Development (maximum: 15 points)
GREV provides us with five evaluation criteria: elaboration of all aspects of the plan correct assembly and positioning of the items in conformity with the plan balance, by giving to each thematic point the importance corresponding to its significance within the theme connection between the items and the thematic text depth, shown through connections, cross references, ramifications, causes and effects

5 How to reach a maximum of consistency?
Evaluation of thematic exhibits requires capabilities on three different levels: knowledge and understanding of evaluation criteria (1st level) broad thematic and philatelic knowledge (2nd level) consistent allotment of points according to criteria requires an agreement about proper scales (3rd level) “Starting level” at 80% average of thematic exhibits at FIP exhibitions (80.5 points) proposal: 80% = absense of errors, but nothing special

6 Development (maximum: 15 points)
aspects which are required for 12 out of 15 points: elaboration of all aspects of the plan correct assembly and positioning of the items in conformity with the plan balance, by giving to each thematic point the importance corresponding to its significance within the theme necessary connection between the items and the thematic text aspects which award additional points: perfect connection between the items and the thematic text depth, shown through connections, cross references, ramifications, causes and effects

7 Thematic knowledge Components of Thematic Knowledge:
factual knowledge of the chosen theme (both, general and detailed) knowledge of the philatelic material available for that theme background knowledge of this philatelic material (design, reason for issue etc.) knowledge of the specific importance of the philatelic pieces (“specific” = within the theme): Which items are seen as “key pieces” by the community of collectors of that field? presence of new thematic findings for the theme use of material that has a thematic qualification which is not immediately obvious and needs to be discovered by the exhibitor

8 Thematic knowledge (aspects of study and research)
Components of Thematic Knowledge: factual knowledge of the chosen theme (both, general and detailed) knowledge of the philatelic material available for that theme background knowledge of this philatelic material (design, reason for issue etc.) knowledge of the specific importance of the philatelic pieces (“specific” = within the theme): Which items are seen as “key pieces” by the community of collectors of that field? presence of new thematic findings for the theme use of material that has a thematic qualification which is not immediately obvious and needs to be discovered by the exhibitor

9 Thematic knowledge (maximum: 15 points)
GREV provides us with four evaluation criteria: appropriateness, conciseness and correctness of thematic text correct thematic use of the material presence of new thematic findings for the theme use of material that has a thematic qualification which is not immediately obvious and needs to be discovered by the exhibitor

10 Thematic knowledge (maximum: 15 points)
aspects which are required for 12 out of 15 points: appropriateness, conciseness and correctness of thematic text correct thematic use of the material aspects which award additional points: presence of new thematic findings for the theme use of material that has a thematic qualification which is not immediately obvious and needs to be discovered by the exhibitor

11 Thematic knowledge (maximum: 15 points)
aspects which are required for 12 out of 15 points: appropriateness, conciseness and correctness of thematic text correct thematic use of the material aspects which award additional points: presence of new thematic findings for the theme use of material that has a thematic qualification which is not immediately obvious and needs to be discovered by the exhibitor Research resulting in a new plan => innovation !
