4 What is the novel about? Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker—his classmate—who committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he’ll find out how he made the list.

5 Curse Words This is authentic dialog/language for our characters. End of story. I don’t expect you to think this is a free pass to repeat it. I expect you to have the maturity to read it and acknowledge the need for authentic dialog.

6 Uncomfortable Content
There will be things that happen in this book that may make you uncomfortable. Even though these things are uncomfortable, these are things that happen every day to teenagers in our country. I wish that we could live in a world free of bullies, gossip, and lies, but that is not how our world works right now.
