1 Chapter 17 Objectives: 1) Define the Law of Reflection and use a plane mirror as an example. 2) Differentiate between regular and diffuse reflection. 3) Be able to use ray tracing to locate the image formed by a plane mirror. 4) In regard to images, contrast real from virtual, upright from inverted, and enlarged from reduced. 5) Apply ray tracing to concave mirrors to locate the images formed by objects located at various distances from the mirror. 6) Use the mirror equation to locate and detail images formed using concave mirrors.

2 7) Apply ray tracing to convex mirrors to locate the images formed by objects located at various distances from the mirror. 8) Use the mirror equation to locate and detail images formed using convex mirrors. 9) Be able to provide applications of all three types of mirrors.

3 Ch. 17 Reflection and Mirrors
I) Reflection from Plane Mirrors A) The Law of Reflection

4 * “The angle the incident ray makes with the ________ line is ______ to the angle the reflected ray makes with the _______ line.” 1) Types of Reflection: a) Specular or Regular Reflection

5 b) Diffuse Reflection B) Objects and Plane Mirror Images 1) ______________: A flat, smooth surface from which light is reflected by specular reflection.

6 C) Properties of Plane Mirror Images

II) Curved Mirrors

8 A) Concave Mirrors

9 B) Graphical Method of Locating an Image (Ray
Tracing Diagrams) 1) Object located beyond “C”:

10 2) Object located between “C” and “f”:
3) Object located inside “f”:

11 C) Mathematical Method of Locating the Image
1) The Mirror Equation: 2) The Magnification Equation:

3 cont.) Sample Problem: A 15.0 cm tall pencil is 20.0 cm from a 16.0 cm radius of curvature (center of curvature) concave mirror. Determine the image position; type; magnification; and height.

14 D) Convex Mirrors

15 1) Finding the Image a) Using Ray tracing

16 b) Using the Mirror Equation: Find the image location and height of 6 ft. person (183 cm) standing 12 ft (366 cm) in front of a convex mirror of focal length -42 cm.
