3. Before providing care for Baby…
You must hear the chime that means Baby recognizes you.

6. When Baby Starts Crying…
Step 1: Pick Baby up and listen for the chime sound (recognizing you as the parent).
Step 2: Try feeding, burping, rocking, or changing diapers.
If you heard the chime and Baby is still crying:
Step 3: Pick Baby up and try rocking for 1 minute.
If you did not hear the chime and Baby is still crying:
Step 4: Double-check the ID

7. Feeding, Burping, Rocking, and Diapering…
Feeding: Hold the bottle to baby’s mouth. Baby makes feeding sounds and coos when done. Hold Baby while feeding or Baby cries.
Burping: Pat Baby’s back. Baby makes small whimpering sounds and then burps after several minutes.
Rocking: Provide constant, gentle rocking motion. Baby makes soft whimpering sounds and coos when done.
Diapering: Take Baby’s diaper off. Baby still whimpers. Put the OTHER diaper on. Baby coos.

8. Other things that may happen…
Breathing sounds mean Baby is sleeping or being rocked.
Coughing or cooing sounds mean Baby is awake.
Hearing the ID chime but not being able to quiet Baby for a few minutes means Baby was just fussy.
Baby cries if it is upside down or on its tummy for five or more seconds.
If you are feeding, burping, rocking, or changing Baby when the head falls back or you roughly handle Baby, Baby screams! Rock baby until it is quiet. You don’t need to care for Baby until it cries again.
You have two minutes to start caring for Baby before missed care is recorded.

9. Frustration-reducing measures when Baby cries…
Take several deep breaths and count to 10.
Say the alphabet.
Put Baby in a safe place, then leave the room for a few minutes.
Close your eyes and think of something pleasant.
Ask someone else to help.
RealCare Baby II records Shaken Baby Syndrome if it is shaken (head moves back, forward, and back again in 2 seconds.)

10. Do Not…
DO NOT leave Baby in the car EVER!!! (or leave anywhere that is excessively hot/cold)
DO NOT give Baby a bath or immerse Baby in water. Never allow water to come in contact with the electronics in Baby’s back. You can use a baby wipe or a damp wash cloth on Baby, but NEVER water!
DO NOT take your wristband off- it MUST be on when you arrive on Monday
DO NOT use cleaner or abrasives on Baby’s head (they will remove the paint) Wipe the head with a baby wipe or wet cloth to remove dirt from surface.
DO NOT get newsprint/magazines, pens & markers, or clothing dye near Baby – it will stain Baby’s skin. (keep Baby’s skin protected from stains by keeping Baby clothed and wrapped in a blanket).

11. Driving:
Baby may cry while you’re driving. It may start unexpectedly, and you should be prepared.
Do not feed, burp, rock, change diapers, or otherwise care for Baby while driving.
You must bring your vehicle to a complete stop in a safe location before caring for Baby, or to retrieve a piece of baby’s equipment that falls.
Failure to install Baby in a car seat in a motor vehicle could result in Baby or supplies becoming projectiles in the event of a sudden stop or accident.

12. Location…
Never leave Baby unattended in a public place given the potential for Baby to be mistaken for a real infant.
Do not place Baby in or near water.
Do not place Baby on or near a stove, especially while cooking.
Baby should sleep somewhere close to your bed, but NOT in bed with you. Baby may fall out of the bed or you could roll over it, causing damage to Baby and discomfort to you.

13. Interaction with others…
Loud crying near people with potentially serious physical conditions, such as those susceptible to heart attack or stroke, should be avoided.
Do not allow small children to play with Baby. Baby’s hands and feet are small enough to be a choking hazard for a real child.
Baby’s crying or other sounds may cause pets to become agitated or aggressive. Keep Baby out of the reach of pets or other animals.

14. Physical precautions…
To avoid straining your arms, use an infant car seat or carrier to transport Baby, rather than holding Baby at all times. Holding techniques are listed on the Student Care Card that accompanies Baby.
Baby weighs 6 ½ - 7 lbs and could cause discomfort for individuals with back pain.

15. Simulation Rules…
You must NEVER remove your wristband. Not only will you be deducted points, but the ID may be lost, or you may stumble around in the dark looking for it if Baby cries during the night.
You should note in your diary where you had to delay caring for Baby because your safety or the safety of others may have been compromised.
Do NOT operate any type of equipment or attempt tasks requiring the use of both hands while holding Baby.

16. Baby will record neglect if…
It takes you longer than TWO minutes to care for Baby.
Although real infants may be fussy for long periods of time, RealCare Baby II will not be fussy for more than THREE minutes.

17. Rough Handling/Abuse
If Baby is roughly handled, abused, or its head is not supported the baby will cry harder and the electronics will record the event.
Avoid rough handling and head support failure by:
not juggling too many things
not throwing baby in the air
not letting others hold Baby
not leaving baby unattended
not letting others shake Baby

18. On your Delivery Day…
Pick your Baby during your class period on the day you have signed up for.
Have a name picked out for Baby!
Baby can’t leave the “hospital” without a name.
Receive diary and instructions for your project.

19. On your Return day (Monday)…
Return baby during your class period
You MUST have your wristband on when you return.
You MUST return with ALL the items you left with.
Baby/supplies must be returned in the same condition it was when you left on Friday.
A report will be printed up and given to you during your next class period.

20. Sign Up for Delivery Day!
Bring your SIGNED parent form during class.
The date and time you return your signed forms will be recorded, and you may sign up for your “delivery day” in the order they were returned.

21. Alternate Assignment
Alternate assignments will be granted if your parent indicates on the form by checking the appropriate blank.
Alternate assignments will be distributed to students who elect not to take home a baby and will be expected to be turned in ONE WEEK from distribution. (There are two parts to the assignment– one week for EACH will be given).
Alternate assignments will be just as time-consuming as taking care of the babies will be.
If you do not think you can PROPERLY care for the RealCare Baby, it is recommended that you opt for the alternate assignment.

22. Grading for Project GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!!!
This project counts as a TEST grade.
The grade comes from the computer program 

24. Yellow Packet
