1 Early American Lit

2 Discuss what you know about…

3 The Young Puritan’s Code
Read the text with a partner paraphrasing each resolution in the margin. Do we see any of these resolutions in today’s society?

4 Discussing The Puritan Code
What does the introduction tell you about the author? According to Edwards, how can a person judge whether or not to “do something”? When does Edwards say it is acceptable to “speak evil” of a person? Do you agree? Why/why not? After reading this code, do you think Edwards felt people were generally good, or generally weak? Explain.

5 Puritan Philosophy Original Sin- Everybody a sinner, since everyone born of “original sin” Predetermination- God determines all events and actions- all according to plan that God has laid out in advance Morality- Duty of all people to constantly examine their lives for sin, and live as purely as possible in all of their actions- private and public (“Puritan angst”).

6 Puritan Philosophy Egalitarianism-  People should have direct relationship with God, as opposed to one translated through Pope and priests- also, believed that all people equal under eyes of God. Education- People should be educated so they can read religious texts. - Founded several colleges (including Harvard) Work Ethic- Activities outside of religious study and work were generally considered sinful - No holidays celebrated, not even religious ones (sinful).

7 Anne Bradstreet Born 1612, travelled to America in 1630
Father and husband both governors of Massachusetts 8 children, lived to be 60 years old Questioned the power of male hierarchy and God Conflict between love of nature and family in present world vs. religion’s hope for the future

8 Poetry Characteristics
Self-effacing "apology" (art claiming artlessness) gradually becomes more authoritative (bold assertion followed by retraction) Distaste for dualism and hierarchy; preference for balance Attachment to nature and the body (even questioning God) Humor and irony which allow her to say the unsayable Self-exploration through historic and mythic heroines Dwelling on the domestic as authoritative

9 Compare and Contrast Consider the epitaphs on the following slides. How are they similar? How are they different? What do they tell us about Puritan culture? ep·i·taph ˈepəˌtaf/ Noun a phrase or statement written in memory of a person who has died, especially as an inscription on a tombstone.

10 Epitaph for her mother Here lies/ A worthy matron of unspotted life,/ A loving mother and obedient wife,/ A friendly neighbor, pitiful to poor,/ Whom oft she fed, and clothed with her store;/ To servants wisely aweful, but yet kind,/ And as they did, so they reward did find:/ A true instructor of her family,/ The which she ordered with dexterity,/ The public meetings ever did frequent,/ And in her closest constant hours she spent;/ Religious in all her words and ways,/ Preparing still for death, till end of days:/ Of all her children, children lived to see,/ Then dying, left a blessed memory.

11 Epitaph for her father Within this tomb a patriot lies/ That was both pious, just and wise,/ To truth a shield, to right a wall,/ To sectaries a whip and maul,/ A magazine of history,/ A prizer of good company/ In manners pleasant and severe/ The good him loved, the bad did fear,/ And when his time with years was spent/ In some rejoiced, more did lament./

12 Interpret the poem. How is it ironic
Interpret the poem. How is it ironic? What does this tell us about Bradstreet? Now say, have women worth, or have they none Or had they some, but with our Queen is't gone? Nay, masculines, you have taxed us long; But she, though dead, will vindicate our wrong. Let such as say our sex is void of reason, Know 'tis a slander now, but once was treason.
