2 DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVES
The development objectives of “Senegal Sustainable and Participatory Energy Management project” were to meet an important part of the rapidly growing urban demand for household fuels without the further loss of forest cover and the ecosystem carbon sequestration potential and biodiversity and to generate employment and revenues for participating rural communities Project Components Preparatory and support activities Sustainable woodfuels supply management Demand management and inter-fuel substitution options

Vegetation assessment of the Tambacounda and Kolda region/ 1.28 Million Ha of forest Design of monitoring and evaluation system (GIS/Database) Pasture Land assessment: Ha covered. Forest inventory Pastoral inventory

Series of participatory rural appraisals in the project zone Preparation of detailed implementation plan for the annual participatory FM modules Communication strategy to support participation P R A in village

5 Component 2: Sustainable woodfuels supply management
Sustainable community-run forest management system over an area of Ha from which woodfuel would be produced Create a buffer zone around Niokolo Koba national park Charcoal production process Land use map End product Sustainable plot Fuelwood 8years rotation

6 Component 3: Demand management and inter-fuel substitution options
Support for the reorganization and modernization of the urban charcoal trade Support promotion of LPG and kerosene as substitute household fuels Dissemination of improve stoves by private sector and NGO community Jambar stove Charcoal bag Prototype kerosene stoves

9 KEYS TO SUCCESS/LESSONS LEARNED
Traditional energy supply system can be sustainable Clear understanding of the project design and implementation requirements and commitment by both beneficiaries and field agents are essential to maintain project achievement and sustainability Localized sustainability is not sufficient, community forest management should be extended nationwide Diversification of the economic base in participatory villages and the strengthening of local institution and organizations are essential to sustainability and poverty alleviation Gender investments are real poverty alleviation
