Engage: In your opinion, do you think Macbeth will be a good king?
No because he is easily controlled. No because he is not loyal. Yes because he is ruthless and able to do things other people may find difficult. Which statement do you agree with? Can you provide another point of argument?

Act 3, Scene 1 Macbeth is crowned King of Scotland. How do you think he is feeling at this point in the play? Would the prophecies still play upon his mind? What is the difference between Macbeth’s power as a ruler and King Duncan’s?

Examine Macbeth’s state of mind in this extract.
To be thus is nothing, But to be safely thus. Our fears in Banquo Stick deep, and in his royalty of nature Reigns that which would be feared. 'Tis much he dares, And to that dauntless temper of his mind He hath a wisdom that doth guide his valour To act in safety. There is none but he Whose being I do fear, and under him My genius is rebuked, as it is said Mark Antony’s was by Caesar. He chid the sisters When first they put the name of king upon me And bade them speak to him. Then, prophet like, They hailed him father to a line of kings. Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown And put a barren sceptre in my grip, Thence to be wrenched with an unilineal hand, No son of mine succeeding. If ’t be so, For Banquo’s issue have I filed my mind; For them the gracious Duncan have I murdered; Put rancors in the vessel of my peace Only for them; and mine eternal jewel Given to the common enemy of man, To make them kings, the seed of Banquo kings! Rather than so, come fate into the list, And champion me to th' utterance. Who’s there? Examine Macbeth’s state of mind in this extract. As we read the soliloquy, highlight and annotate evidence which suggest: Macbeth is fearful of his safety He reveals his intentions to murder Banquo He is obsessed with Banquo and the witches His power is weak as he does not have an heir He will not allow fate to stand in his way He is paranoid

Learning Objective: To EVALUATE Macbeth’s character in Act 3, Scene 2.
Learning Outcome: To EXPLAIN the changes in Macbeth’s character and his relationship with Lady Macbeth. Literacy Objective: Homophones – There/their/they’re Correct the homophones

Act 3, Scene 2 Lady Macbeth expresses despair and lack of content with being Queen. Macbeth enters and tells his wife that he too is discontented, saying that his mind is “full of scorpions.” He feels that the business that they began by killing Duncan is not yet complete because there are still threats to the throne that must be eliminated. Macbeth tells his wife that he has planned “a deed of dreadful note” for Banquo and Fleance and urges her to be jovial and kind to Banquo during the evening’s feast, in order to lure their next victim into a false sense of security.

Have they found happiness in what they have achieved?
Act Three, Scene Two from line 4 LADY MACBETH Nought's had, all's spent, Where our desire is got without content: 5 'Tis safer to be that which we destroy Than by destruction dwell in doubtful joy. Enter MACBETH How now, my lord! why do you keep alone, Of sorriest fancies your companions making, Using those thoughts which should indeed have died 10 With them they think on? Things without all remedy Should be without regard: what's done is done. MACBETH We have scotch'd the snake, not kill'd it: She'll close and be herself, whilst our poor malice Remains in danger of her former tooth But let the frame of things disjoint, both the worlds suffer, Ere we will eat our meal in fear and sleep In the affliction of these terrible dreams That shake us nightly: better be with the dead, Whom we, to gain our peace, have sent to peace, 20 Than on the torture of the mind to lie In restless ecstasy. Duncan is in his grave; After life's fitful fever he sleeps well; Treason has done his worst: nor steel, nor poison, Malice domestic, foreign levy, nothing, 25 Can touch him further. AO1 Have they found happiness in what they have achieved? Macbeth is wallowing in self pity and doubts. How does this differ to how he was originally presented? AO1 How does Lady Macbeth’s attitude contrast to her husband’s? AO1 How does Duncan still achieve more in death than Macbeth?

Which line recalls Lady Macbeth’s earlier words in Act 1, Scene 5?
LADY MACBETH Come on; Gentle my lord, sleek o'er your rugged looks; Be bright and jovial among your guests to-night. MACBETH So shall I, love; and so, I pray, be you: Let your remembrance apply to Banquo; Present him eminence, both with eye and tongue: Unsafe the while, that we Must lave our honours in these flattering streams, And make our faces vizards to our hearts, Disguising what they are. LADY MACBETH You must leave this. MACBETH O, full of scorpions is my mind, dear wife! Thou know'st that Banquo, and his Fleance, lives. LADY MACBETH But in them nature's copy's not eterne. MACBETH There's comfort yet; they are assailable; Then be thou jocund: ere the bat hath flown His cloister'd flight, ere to black Hecate's summons The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums Hath rung night's yawning peal, there shall be done A deed of dreadful note. Which line recalls Lady Macbeth’s earlier words in Act 1, Scene 5? AO2 – What device is this? What does it suggest about Macbeth’s state of mind?
12
LADY MACBETH What's to be done
LADY MACBETH What's to be done? MACBETH Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck, Till thou applaud the deed. Come, seeling night, Scarf up the tender eye of pitiful day; And with thy bloody and invisible hand Cancel and tear to pieces that great bond Which keeps me pale! Light thickens; and the crow Makes wing to the rooky wood: Good things of day begin to droop and drowse; While night's black agents to their preys do rouse. Thou marvell'st at my words: but hold thee still; Things bad begun make strong themselves by ill. So, prithee, go with me. Exeunt What does Macbeth call upon to conceal his evil deeds? How do we know Macbeth deliberately conceals his actions from his wife? Why doesn’t Macbeth tell his wife what fate he has planned for Banquo? Macbeth now longs to be rid of his humanity. The audience sees a shift in his character in this scene. What do you think about him at this point?
