1 MANİSA MESİR FESTİVAL According to a belief, the wife of the Ottoman Sultan Yavuz Sultan Selim and the mother of Kanuni Sultan Süleyman, known as Süleyman the Magnificient, Hafsa Sultan became while she was in Manisa. Since no cures were found, the head of Sultan Mosque Madrasah – Merkez Efendi – prepared a paste mixture consisting of herbs and spices.

2 Hafsa Sultan, who got better by this paste that was prepared by using 41 different spices, ordered this medicine to be given to the patients. After the public demand, it was wrapped in paper and ordered to be tossed out from the doom and the minarets of Sultan Mosque. This is how the Manisa Mesir Festival was born.

4 Mesir Paste Being one of the oldest ancient cities of Anatolia, cradle of civilizations, you can feel a meaningful charity and holiday mood in Manisa with Mesir tradition. Previously used for treatment, then became tradition, there are various beliefs about the birth of Mesir.

5 Characteristics of Mesir
The belief that Mesir paste is very good and heals the patients spread as a myth in Anatolia. General characteristics are that it is good to physical and mental health, is tasty and smells good. Besides, it is used for aches, common cold, indigestion and halitosis. Moreover, according to a belief in public, it is believed that if one eats the paste he /she will not be bitten by poisonous animals. Even the ones with a serious illness will feel fine if they eat mesir on Newroz. It is also said that it is good for infantile diseases. These are the 41 spices used in the making of Mesir; Ginger, Zulumba, Kremtartar, Kişmiş, Kebabiye, Havlican, Coconut, Anise, Allspice, Hiyerşambe, Rosin, Zağfran, Üdül Kahr, Çöpçini, Mustard, Eksir, Clove, Çivit, Licorice Extract, Tiryak, Yellow Myrobalan, Raziyane, Cumin, Turmeric, Tarçın Çiçeği, Black Pepper, Çörek Otu, Darıfülfül, Ravend, Limon Tuzu, Kakule, Şamlı, Vanilla, Sugar, Günbalı, Hindistan Çiçeği, Lemon Peel, Galanda, Tekemercini Tohumu and Orange Peel.

7 Saray-ı Amire Built in 1445 by Murat 2nd and upgraded by Fatih Sultan Mehmet, Saray-I Amire had been the residence of princes and people under them for a century. Manisa has become the indispensable city of Ottoman Empire’s political, social and cultural life. In his Seyahatname, Evliya Çelebi wrote “If 5000 men entered, it would still be empty” about Manisa Palace.  The description in Ottoman language is as follows; “…ve Saray-ı Şehzadegân şark ve şimal canibinde haid şimal saray ki kapıları ol canibedir. Önü vasi meydandır. Kuzey-doğu tarafından duvarlarla çevrili şehzadeler sarayı vardır ki bu sarayın kapıları kuzey tarafında olup, ön tarafı geniş bir meydandır”. The miniature of Manisa Palace is in “Ş name-I Al-I Osman” of Hasan Paşa who is one of the important miniaturists of II. Mehmet period, registered to Topkapı Palace Museum.
