All passed at the same time in 1791.
Why? Provides a written guarantee of individual rights.

Only applied to the federal gov.
States had to write their own constitutions. Some of these rights weren’t enforceable at the state level.

First Amendment Religion Speech Press Assembly Petition

Second Amendment State Militias Right to own guns

Third Amendment No forced quartering of troops in peacetime.

Fourth Amendment No unreasonable search & seizure.
Search warrant needed. Must have probable cause.

Fifth Amendment Must be charged with a crime.
No double jeopardy (sorry Alex!). Not forced to testify against yourself. No private property taken w/o compensation. Due process of law.

Sixth Amendment Right to a speedy, public trial
Impartial jury of your peers Must know the charge Confront your accusers Assistance of a lawyer

Seventh Amendment Right of jury trial

Eighth Amendment No excessive bail or fines
No cruel or unusual punishment

Ninth Amendment Rights not listed are guaranteed to the people
13
Tenth Amendment Powers not given to the federal gov. are reserved to the states or the people
