Portfolio Quiz Limericks are Fun

26 What is a Limerick? A limerick is a short, comical, and almost musical poem that often borders on the nonsensical or obscene. It was popularized in English by Edward Lear (and thus Limerick Day is celebrated on his birthday, May 12). Do you remember #19 in your notebook???? It was the start of a limerick (maybe?).

27 Rhythm and Meaning Remember this slide??? This is a limerick!!!
The anapest is used for a galloping kind of rhythm ~~/ ~~/ or for a light, almost comic feeling: ~ / ~ ~ / ~ ~ / There once was a fellow at Drew Who spotted a mouse in his stew, Told the waiter about it, who said “Well don’t shout it” Or the rest will be wanting one too!” Remember this slide??? This is a limerick!!!

28 What is a Limerick?

30

31 20. Limericks are Fun The last part of line 1 is usually a prepositional phrase . . . > from the zoo > from Boise > in a tree > on a farm Start with your first line The last word needs to be an easy rhyming word because you need THREE lines to rhyme!! Make the RHYTHM work Listen for it!! This line will be 8 or 9 syllables.

32 23. Limericks are Fun You are going to have a “problem” in lines 3-4 that will resolve in line 5. Line 2 rhymes with line 1. It continues / sets up a story It will also be 8-9 syllables

33 23. Limericks are Fun Think of a 'turn' or 'twist' in your story. This problem will be resolved (cleverly) in line 5. Save the punchline for line 5. Line 3 and 4 have their own rhyme. The fun in the limerick comes in the wait for the kick at the end (line 5 is coming!!!!).

34 23. Limericks are Fun Line 5 reverts to rhyme w/ lines 1 & 2.
This is the clever / punny ending. Add a title that adds meaning to the poem. Line 5 reverts to rhyme w/ lines 1 & 2. Wrap up the story with a punchline. Go back to your list of rhyme words and find a nice one to cinch it all together. This is the most difficult part. Don't be put off if your first few limericks aren't funny enough.

An arrangement of linguistic elements in which the typographical effect (arrangement of physical features) is important in conveying meaning referred to as visual poetry
