Warm Up:
Think about a time in your life when you did something you deeply regretted or of which you were ashamed. How did your regret or shame make you feel over time? What steps did you take to fix the situation or feeling? How did those steps, if any, affect you or others?

5. Motif vs. Theme
Motif is a large universal idea (something everyone can understand)
Love, death, lust, greed, bulling, growing up, etc.
It can be located by reoccurring, images, words, conflicts, etc
Each characters eyes are described in detail
The word lust is continually repeated
All of the conflict surround feuding couples.
A theme is the author message about the motif that he/she develops through the course of their writing.
Love is an unbreakable bond.
Love is dangerous and should be avoided
Love makes all things possible

6. Think music…Think about songs that deal with love! (Too many to name)

All these songs are about love (the motif), but do they all have the same message (the theme)?

You may ask for help from your group or from me--use this time to get help and clear up any confusion!

13. The Kite Runner chapters 1-3
The novel opens with a flashback. What does Amir’s memory of this suggest about his sense of worth? How does this opening set the tone for the novel?
Discuss the relationships development between Hassan and Amir in these chapters. How does each of their individual lives and societal perceptions impact the change or lack of change?
Discuss the brief mention of both Hassan and Amir’s mothers. What does this say about the cultural perception of women?
Baba, Amir’s father is a complex character. Does he love his son? Why might he treat Amir they way he does?

15. Gathering quotes and what you should be doing with them besides highlighting:

“I was always learning things about Baba from other people” (Hosseini 18).
This shows how Amir has a strained relationship with his father and that he lacks a personal connection with him.
“ I worshipped Baba with intensity approaching the religious. But Right then, I wished I could open my veins and drain his cursed blood from my body” ( Hosseini 32).
Because of that strained relationship that Amir and Baba share, Amir is internally conflicted with his love and admirations for his father. This could prove to be a major factor in the choices Amir makes.

Today is the day you should be editing your entire presentation. Everyone should be finished with all their own slides and ready to evaluate and revise all slides. Keep the following in mind:
Consistent background and font
20 slides of information plus title slide and Works Cited slides
Accurate MLA in-text citations
Accurate MLA Works cited page/slides
Effective visual aids and credits
Mechanics: grammar, phrasing, spelling, etc.
Make sure you have a printing person and a backup printing person! This is due at the start of class tomorrow!

Discuss Amir’s envy at the beginning of this novel and explain how this characteristic might develop into a conflict.
Discuss the irony in Assef’s heritage and his beliefs. What do you suppose Hosseini is trying to say with this contradiction?
How does Amir view the various actions and outcomes of Hassan in this chapter? What does this say about each of their character? How might this impact future conflicts?
What might the final lines of the chapter foreshadow?

Form a group with students who are tracking the same motif as you. In your group discuss the following:
Which situations are most vital in the development of your motif?
How do literary elements (setting, characterization, conflict) aid in helping your motif to evolve?
How does the development of the situation impact the motif?
Which quotes best support the motif development?
What inferences can you make about the continued development of this motif?

27. Literature group discussion: Chapters 1-5
In your groups, each member needs to discuss the development of their motif. Choose very specific quotes that show the connection between setting, characterization, and conflict that help to develop your motif “working” theme. This is a discussion, so feel free to contribute.
Fill out the charts and annotate your novel based on your partners and your discussion.
After your discussion, begin reading chapters Continue to looks for quotes that help to develop your theme. As a group discuss the following while reading:
The change in the relationship between Baba and Amir and how that affects Amir and Hassan’s relationship.
Do you agree or disagree with Amir’s decisions? Why or why not?
