Vegetative reproduction
Bulbs, corms, stolons, rhizomes

Learning outcomes Differentiate between sexual and asexual reproduction e.g. bulbs, corms, tubers, stolons and rhizomes Question why this process differs from sexual reproduction

activity In your group discuss what is vegetative reproduction 2mins

Vegetative reproduction
Vegetative reproduction entails growing a new plant from some part of the old plant.

Methods of vegetative production
Bulbs Corms Stolons Rhizomes tubers

bulbs Bulbs consist of a stem with fleshy leaves attached to it in which food is stored. Shoots and flowers develop from the main bud, and may develop from an axillary bud between the leaves. If two buds develop in this way then each will form a bulb for the following year Examples: Narcissus, tulip and onion

Parts of a onion

corms Similar to a bulb but is made up primarily of a short swollen stem in which the food is stored. Shoots and flowers develop from the main bud, and may develop from an axillary bud between the leaves. If two buds develop in this way then each will form a corm for the following year. The new corm develops on top of the old one which eventually withers away Examples: Crocus and gladioli

Parts of a corm

stolons a stolon is a stem that grows horizontally close to the ground and puts down roots from its nodes. The new plant is fed through the stolon until it becomes self sufficient when the stolons will die. Stolons are also called runners. Examples: Buttercups and strawberries

Parts of a stolon

rhizomes Similar to stolons Stems grow under the surface
Some are used to store food Examples of non food storing: Couch grass and nettle Examples of food storing: Iris and ginger

sTem tubers Stem tubers are organs formed at the end of the rhizomes which store food over inter and develop into independent plants in the following year. Examples: Potatoes artichokes

Root tubers Root tubers are organs formed at the end of the roots which store food over the winter. Examples: dahlias
