1 Concepts in Engineering Design
Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing Kurnool, INDIA Lecture 1

2 What is an engineering? The branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures. A field of study or activity concerned with modification or development in a particular area. "software engineering" The action of working artfully to bring something about. What is Design ??????????????????????????????????????

3 What is engineering design?
“Engineering design is a thoughtful process for generating plans or schemes for devices systems or processes that attain given objectives, while adhering to specified constraints”

4 ? Objective: Wheel chair for physically challenged
Science and engineering aspects in the design ? Ohhhh, somebody has to push this, can’t I go my self (Constraint)

5 ? Objective : Automatic handicapped chair
Science and engineering aspects in the design ? Hi designer I am unable to climb steps (Constraint)

6 Objective : Automatic chair that can climb the steps
Science and engineering aspects in the design ? Ohhhh noooo, I am unable to go on muddy and wet roads

7 Objective: The automatic wheel chair for muddy roads
Science and engineering aspects in the design ? Constraint : ??????????????????????????????????????????????????

8 When an engineering designer uncertain about the next objective, there won’t be any new product
Company or industry

9 When they got the new objective that can generate a new product

10 Its a cycle Client Designer USER Objective Product

11 Basic terms in engineering Design
DESIGN OBJECTIVE The target feature or behavior that our design has to exhibit DESIGN CONSTRAINT The limits or restrictions of the objective of the design with out which design is not accepted FUNCTIONS : Things a designed system is supposed to do MEANS : A method or process in which me achieve the functions in our design FORM The shape and structure of the design METRIC A scale to measure the success of a design SPECIFICATIONS Quantitative Engineering statements about design functions performance DESIGN “COMMUNICATION” The description of a design with respect to design and engineering specifications.

12 Engineering Design is a systematic intelligent process, a creative work and a thought process over observations. Engineering design focuses on physics, such as speed, mass and other performance measures while product design also considers user and consumers by asking what the user wants in a product. Engineering design problems are challenging because they are not based on well defined principles, instead designer has to make a principle for particular design to meet a particular objective. Design problems are open ended because they have many different and yet optimized solutions Design aspects are mostly learned by doing (Studio aspect)

15 The Design process

16 The Design process

17 This is all about the generalized design philosophy, but the true designer teams may have their own pattern which matters a lot

18 Types of Designs Design by evolution : The design that the product of specific function or feature evolve step by step from initial—better-- best

19 Types of Designs The idea start from a need
Original design : Purely a new design (which wont exist ) to address a need where there is no well defined solution. The idea start from a need Risk of technical error is high

20 Types of Designs

21 Types of Designs

22 Types of Designs

23 Surface, water to surface 350-600 km, Ballistic
Types of Designs Configuration design Different components are selected and assemble them to make a new configuration is called configuration design. In this the new configuration fulfill a specific requirement which is not possible by old configurations. Surface to surface, water to surface, air to surface km (700 km). The super sonic velocity 3400 km/h, Cruise Surface, water to surface km, Ballistic

24 Types of Designs Parametric Design
An optimal design with specific and proper parameters. In this type of design the parameters play an important role for the design to exist.
