3. How will this session benefit you?
You will gain a better understanding of why companies support charities in general and RIS specifically. This session is an opportunity for you to share your ideas and learn about corporate partnerships.

4. What is Corporate Social Responsibility?
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a business approach that contributes to sustainable development by delivering economic, social and environmental benefits for all stakeholders.
The idea that by doing good companies can actually strengthen their business.
We are interested in the ‘social’ strand, often known as community investment

6. There are many reasons…PR
Prestige and recognition
Engaging employees
Strengthening links with their communities
Business value
Brand
Future pipeline of employees
PR – generating good news stories, showing the business in a positive light
Prestige – winning awards, being the best in another area, being ‘thought leaders’, about more than profit
Engaging employees – feel good factor, learning and development opportunities
Communities – particularly for big local businesses positive links in the community are important, potential employees, local government relations etc.
Business value – Customers prefer companies that ‘give back’ and are more likely to buy from them
Brand – Aligning their brand with their CSR work, it becoming part of their business. E.g. Barclays Digital Skills, M&S Plan A etc.
Future pipeline of employees – particularly relevant for STEM, encouraging kids into engineering, science, coding etc and future proofing their business.

9. Examples of what we are doing: Prudential Graduation Event
Prudential hosted a Uni Pathways celebration event at their London office featuring:
A ‘graduation’ for pupils
Speeches from staff members
A keynote speech from RIS
Pupils received insight into how their subjects are applied in business through two specific job roles. They also learned about the staff members academic histories and why they joined Prudential

10. Examples of what we are doing: Northern Gas Networks School Outreach
Northern Gas are based in the North West of England and have undertaken limited schools outreach to date. They will be working with RIS and Outwick Academy Adwick to deliver outreach to the school, inspiring pupils about the opportunities available through a career in STEM

11. Examples of what we are doing: Shell
Make the Future - In summer 2016, RIS participants and over 200 pupils were invited to attend Shell’s Make the Future event, a STEM-focused festival of ideas, innovation and friendly competition hosted at the Olympic Park
Meeting Staff - In October 2016, Shell invited participants to join them at their offices in London, onsite in Peterhead and in Aberdeen Harbour to gain a deeper understanding of the vast array of activities undertaken at a multinational engineering firm.
Spoke to a diverse range of Shell experts, including exploration geoscientists, petrophysicists, fuel researchers, traders and a global vice president.
Grasped the scale of Shell’s operations through site visits to the largest gas terminal in the UK and an offshore supply vessel.
Learned how scientific and engineering theory is applied in practice, ranging from how oil is located to separating natural gas.

12. Examples of what we are doing: BAE Systems
Becky Warren and Year 9 pupils from Manchester Creative Academy worked with BAE Systems to provide practical feedback on education resources, helping shape materials for use in schools nationwide. Becky also visited BAE Systems’ site for a CPD event, learning about careers in BAE and receiving a ‘lesson in a box’ on drone physics, both of which she was able to share with pupils

13. Examples of what we are doing
Goldman Sachs invited Clara to a panel discussion on the importance of challenging gender stereotypes in STEM.
As an experienced female astrophysicist working in the classroom contributed a unique, passionate perspective on barriers to progression in science
