Textbook HW pg# section# 1 Due Thursday

2 England and The Colonies 1620-1776
Colonial charters allow for the colonies to be economically self sufficient

3 What was the Economics of the Colonies ? Mercantilism!!!
The economic relationship between England and the 13 colonies is called Mercantilism. The colonies supplied raw materials that were sent back to England to be finished and sold throughout England and the Colonies. PLUS Gold & silver were sought after by all the European powers in an effort to horde as much as possible = Bullionism uses specie = gold & or Silver coin as money

4 The Problem with Mercantilism
England is the “middleman” Lots of colonial smugglers send goods to Spain, France and these smugglers make $$$ by avoiding taxes. And selling directly to foreign markets.

5 Salutary Neglect This term described the loose control of the Colonies by England & how the Colonies began to see themselves as in control and not England’s Parliament or King new freedoms -legislative assemblies lead to the establishment of Colonial governments that were distinctly separate and essentially improved upon Va’s House of Burgesses in 1619, the Mayflower Compact, all of which later influence the American Constitution.

6 Why are the colonies growing apart from England
Forming their own culture Holidays-? Colonial charters = self governing --private enterprise Food Native Americans 7 Years WAR a.k.a. French Indian War: : In NA French vs. British-NA’s choose sides

7 Why are the colonies growing apart from England
New England Town meetings = direct democracy Isolated from England Colonial legislatures govern their own colony Southern Colonies-Paternal society-large land owners, lack of immigration

8 New England town meeting

9 Freedom of the press 1735 John Peter Zenger tried for seditious libel-accused the NY governor of wrongdoing. “The truth is not a crime.”

10 salutary neglect Salutary neglect describes how England Prior to the 7 year war aka French & Indian war—began a period of loose enforcement of its policies in the 13-Colonies as long as raw materials flowed to England and the Colonists continued to buy English produced goods. How did the policy of salutary neglect benefit both England & its colonies?

11 Economic Activities of the 13 Colonies
Southern Colonies--Tobacco, wheat, rice, Indigo, lumber Snuff, cattle Middle Colonies-New York, Delaware, New Jersey , Pennsylvania: furs, beer, shipping, glass, Ocean shipping-merchant fleet New England Colonies: rum, meat, fishing, The COD ship masts, iron, lumber, Ocean shipping-merchant fleet. What was the first American college called? Harvard

12 Map of tide water system
Irregular coast line has lots of harbors that are fed by navigable southern river systems.

13 Geography & the south Tidewater system. Merchant ships went long distances up tidal rivers to directly supply remote plantations and take their cash crops to markets in the north and especially cotton to England. These tidewater plantations were isolated and large with very fertile lands and long growing seasons compared to the short growing season middle colony & even shorter New England growing season. Cotton by 1820 would be the sole cash crop of the American south resulting in large plantations that were economically dependent on cotton production and its export.

14 South vs. North South rural, isolated, poor RxR system, lack of immigration, patriarchal, dependent upon slave labor=not efficient Industrial north-RxRs same size tracks=efficiency, migrants, industrialization, diversified economy more inclusive, tolerant of others.

15 Good harbors up and down the East coast
Savannah, Ga Charleston, Sc Richmond, Va Baltimore , Maryland New York Harbor Albany, NY Boston, Mass Providence, Rhode Island

16 1651 The navigation Acts The colonies were required to do the following: only Colonial or English Ships ¾ English crews Only to England Problems for colonial merchants is: RESTRICTIVE & lacks incentive in pricing and choice of who to do business with.

17 The Path To Revolution

18 Why did Parliament pass the navigation acts

19 Salutary neglect Describes how England began a period of loose enforcement of its policies in the Colonies as long as raw materials flowed to England and the Colonists continued to buy English produced goods. How did the policy of salutary neglect benefit both England & its colonies?

20 Glorious revolution 1688 Why was this revolution significant to the colonies? the passage of the English Bill of Rights--stamped out and ended the absolute monarchy since 1689, England was a constitutional monarchy.
