France, England, and Netherlands Colonizing Eastern half of Canada, and eastern U.S. to Mississippi River (N and S U.S) Reasons to be there differed with each country

New France Explorers: Verranzzano, Cartier, Father Marquette, and Louis Joilet The French went down the St. Lawrence river, explored the great lakes, went down the Mississippi

New France facts Large sized territory but no population: 65,000 settlers by 1760 Fur trading very profitable for the French Capital of New France was city on St. Lawrence River named Quebec Another city was on an island named Mount Royal (Mont Real); Montreal Families not settling New France, young single men in the fur trade were. Not as attached to the land.

The Dutch Move in They commission Brit, Henry Hudson to explore lands for them Among other places, finds the Hudson River and establishes 2 places in present day New York Fort Orange (Albany), and New Amsterdam (New York City) Slow to populate colony

During this period, the islands of the Caribbean are claimed French: Haiti & Martinique Brits: Barbados and Jamaica Dutch: Antillies and Aruba Britain had claims north and south of New Netherland Duke of York was sent to kick the Dutch out. The Dutch surrendered without a fight: New Amsterdam became New York

This conflict decided who’d stay in North America Called French-Indian War Part of the world wide 7 years war between Britain and France French and Indians teamed together but British win entire war

Britain’s Indian Problem
While the French and Dutch got along w/tribes, British settlers did not. British came to settle N. America, the other two countries sent less people and it was temporary British settlers often came because of religious beliefs. They believed Indians to be heathens Settling the land meant farming it. This required the British to relocate Indians. Not Popular
