1 Welcome to the Second Grade!

2 Homework Preparation for third grade
Math: usually a worksheet or workbook page every night (Monday-Thursday) Reading: 20 minutes every night and logged four nights weekly Spelling: writing words three times each and writing 5 sentences

3 Homework Folders Homework folders must go home and be returned daily
Inside is a copy of our behavior chart. Student will chart their behavior DAILY. Please sign and return this chart to school daily

4 Reading Log Reading Logs are brought back and forth daily.
Students or parents may write in the logs as long as the student rates the book and the parent signs. Books are counted by the number of chapters read. Picture books count as 1 chapter. I will check these papers once a week.

5 Bathroom Policy Students may use bathroom when needed. If I notice a student overusing the restroom, or wandering hallways, only certain times will be allowed.

6 Snack Time Students may bring their own snacks and water bottles to school. Our snack time is in the morning. Please try to limit messy and sugary snacks. Birthday snacks are permitted.

7 Guided Reading Assessed using STAR Reading, DRA2’s and Running Records
Grouped together for individualized learning Read chapter and non fiction books Books stay in classroom I will use these books to target our weekly comprehension skills and will include vocabulary lessons for each group.

8 Spelling Aligned to Common Core
Focuses on words that are essential for writing well We work on the words in centers all week so that it isn’t strict memorization

9 Behavior System Students start the day on “Ready to Learn”
May move up 3 times for good choices and behaviors Can also move down 3 times for bad choices and behaviors. First to “Think about it”, next to “Loss of Time”, and finally to “Parent Contact.” “Loss of time, and “Parent Contact” both have notes home.

10 Math Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Addition and Subtractions Concepts Number Patterns Add 2 and 3 digit numbers Subtract 2 digit numbers Number and Operations in Base Ten Place value up to 1,000 Add 3 digit numbers Subtract 3 digit numbers Measurement and Data Money Data Analysis Time Customary and Metric Lengths Geometry Geometric Shapes and Equal Shares

Maps and Location Resources Needs and Wants World Traditions Nation Past and Present Heroes Timelines American Stories Symbols Goods and Services

12 Science New Pearson books!
The focus in on hands on learning experiences Two lessons are taught each week. One day is learning new concepts, the other day is putting this knowledge to use in an experiment. Topics include: Thinking Like A Scientist, Technology and Tools, Living Things Interacting With Their Environment, Growth and Change in Living Things, Earth’s Materials, The Solar System, Weather, Matter, and Motion

13 Language Arts Goal: Paragraph Writing Genres Fiction vs. Non Fiction
Main Character, Summary, Plot, Setting Making predictions and conclusions based on text Fact vs. Opinion Synonyms and antonyms Narrative, Informational and Persuasive Essays Adjectives, nouns, verbs, pronouns, adverbs Writing a letter Reviewing start, middle, and end in stories
