Solve Systems of Equations by Elimination
2
STEPS #1. Line up the variables and equal sign #2. Multiply one or both equations to get the same coefficient that differ only in sign for one of the variables #3. Add the two equations to eliminate one of the variables #4. Solve for the variable you didn’t eliminate #5. Substitute answer from #4 into either equation to solve for the other variable
3
EXAMPLES Solve the systems of equations using elimination #1. 7x + 4y = 27 3x – 4y = 23
4
EXAMPLES Solve the systems of equations using elimination #2. 4x – 2y = -2 6x + y = 5
5
EXAMPLES Solve the systems of equations using elimination #3. -9x + 6y = x – 9y = 13
6
EXAMPLES Solve the systems of equations using elimination #4. -4x +12 = -4y x = 12y – 8
7
EXAMPLES Solve the systems of equations using elimination #5. x – 2y = 5 4x – 8y = 3
8
EXAMPLES Solve the systems of equations using elimination #6. 9x – 3y = 6 3x – y = 2
