1 Technical Meeting with CNR and INAF 7 October 2014
The Open Access Repository R. Barbera, S. Bianco, R. Bruno, C. Carrubba, G. Inserra, M. Maggi, D. Menasce, R. Ricceri Technical Meeting with CNR and INAF 7 October 2014

2 Outline Introductory concepts and driving considerations
Current status of developments Summary and conclusions Technical Meeting with CNR and INAF - 7 October 2014 2

3 How e-Infrastructures support the Scientific Method
(worldwide, cross-domain, collaboration enabler) Data Infrastructures Open Access Doc. Repos. Data Repos. Semantic-web enrichment of linked data Data preservation HTC/HPC Clusters Grids, Clouds Challenge: «walk» across the knowledge path both ways 3

4 Our approach (since March 2014)
Short term - DONE! Create a Open Access repository Make it compliant with both «de jure» and «de facto» standards Make it easily visible and discoverable Medium term - DONE! Use PID/DOI services to tag papers, data, software and VMs where scientific results can be reproduced and extended (agreement established with the DOI Project of the Conference of Italian Universities) Allow federated authentication Interface the repository with local, grid and cloud storage through Science Gateways Outreach - IN PROGRESS Open the repository to other organisations in Italy (we already got the interest of the Science and Technology Park of Sicily) Make it well reputed (already connected to Web Ranking of Repositories) 4

5 Requirements, choices and motivations
Open source Standard compliant Well supported Scalable up to O(106)-O(107) resources (to begin with) Choice: Invenio ( – actual version: our add-ons Motivations: Fully compliant with OAI-PMH and Marc21 standards Co-developed by an international collaboration comprising institutes such as CERN, DESY, EPFL, FNAL, SLAC and used by about 30 scientific institutions worldwide ZENODO (OpenAIRE flagship repository) and SCOAP3 repositories are based on Invenio The CERN Document Server ( contains more than million documents 5

6 The INFN Open Access Repository (www.openaccessrepository.it)
authentication federated Automatic ingestion in place from: papers data

24 Summary and conclusions (1/2)
Open Access Repository is a pilot data preservation repository of INFN and other Italian Research Organisations' products (publications, software, data, etc.) meant to serve both researchers and citizen scientists OAR is powered by the INVENIO software and is both an OAI conforming and an official OpenDOAR data provider, able to automatically harvest resources from different sources, e.g. SCOAP3 It is also one of the official OpenAIRE archives, compliant with version 3.0 of its guidelines Technical Meeting with CNR and INAF - 7 October 2014 24

25 Summary and conclusions (2/2)
OAR allows SAML-based federated authentication and it is one of the Service Providers of the eduGAIN inter- federation It is also connected to Datacite for the issuance and registration of Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) But what makes OAR different from other repositories is its capability to connect to Science Gateways and exploit cloud resources worldwide, including EGI and EUDAT ones, to easily reproduce/extend scientific analyses Technical Meeting with CNR and INAF - 7 October 2014 25
