1 Math, Beauty, Landscapes, Balance and why this thing looks cool.

2 Your brain loves Φ (phi).
The golden ratio is an irrational mathematical constant, approximately Represented by the symbol Φ. Your brain loves Φ (phi).

6 At least since the Renaissance, many artists and architects have proportioned their works to approximate the golden ratio - especially in the form of the golden rectangle, in which the ratio of the longer side to the shorter is the golden ratio—believing this proportion to be aesthetically pleasing.

7 Many of the proportions of The Parthenon are golden ratios.

13 Here a sunflower seed illustrates this principal as the number of clockwise spirals is 55 (marked in red) and the number of counterclockwise spirals is 89 (marked in green).

14 What does all this math have to do with photography?

15 The golden ratio (Phi) is the basis behind the “rule of thirds” in photography.

16 Landscapes and organics are all about balance.
Use the rule of thirds in order to create informal balance.

17 For this project you must choose between organics
A close study of the natural world.

18 And Landscapes A wide angle study of the natural world.

19 For every landscape, ask yourself…
For every landscape, ask yourself…. What is the more interesting here, the sky or the ground?

20 If the sky is more interesting, it should occupy 2/3’s
of the photograph.

21

22 If the ground is more interesting, it should occupy 2/3’s of the photograph.

23

24 Here, the rule of thirds was handled poorly.
While it still uses informal balance, and that works…. A lot of this photograph is boring.

25 If both the sky and foreground seem equally important use formal, 50/50 balance.

26

27 Many successful landscapes have a point interest as well as a horizon line, so both should be placed correctly.
