9 IDENTIFICATION: How are students identified as Pylons Scholars?
The National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC) has identified best practices as those that use multiple measures and valid indicators from multiple sources to screen, assess, and serve gifted scholars. Information should be gathered from multiple sources, in different ways and in different contexts. The KCPS Pylons Advanced Academics Program will use best practices in the identification and continuous assessment of gifted scholars. One of the initial goals of the Pylons Advanced Academics Program is to increase the percentage of students from underrepresented populations identified as potentially gifted. This goal will be accomplished through the screening of 100% of students enrolled in the target grade spans. The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test Second Edition (NNAT2) will be used for this purpose. The NNAT2 is an assessment of general intellectual ability. It will give an accurate, culturally neutral measure of general intellectual ability without reliance on language or motor skills. A score of 120 or above is recommended to be considered as potentially gifted, thus to qualify as a potential Pylons Program scholar. Additional assessment criteria, such as district and state mandated assessments will also be considered for initial placement. Once identified as a Pylons Program Scholar, the Parent /Student/ Teacher / Community Inventory (Appendix B) may be used as a means of gathering additional information to assist the gifted teacher in program planning. Students scoring 119 or below on the NNAT2 may still be considered for the Pylons Advanced Academics Program through the following procedures: Parents, teachers, or community members may submit a referral to the local school. The Parent/Student/Teacher/Community Inventory will be distributed to persons having knowledge of student’s strengths. The referral must include samples of the scholar’s work and/or any other evidence to be considered. An Eligibility Determination Meeting will be scheduled to involve the parent at the local school or at the Pylons Honors Department office. Final decisions will be mailed to the parents. 11 Parenting Gifted Children – article
A few points to keep in mind: Parenting style most effective is “nonauthoritarian” “Because I said so!” .. Almost never works Listening Perfectionism Be careful with praise for products that took “little effort” Praise “effort” not the “product” Grades We want children to learn to “not fear hard work” Down Time Resist child’s insistence on getting involved in too many activities Social Skills Advocate for your child at school
