4. Characters A fictional representation of a person.
Characters are “developed” in two ways:
1. Narrator gives us info about what characters are doing or thinking, or their values. Sometimes the narrator will judge a character’s behavior or provide analysis (Direct characterization).
2. The character’s personality traits and/or motivation(s) may be revealed through actions, dialogue, or thoughts (Indirect characterization).

6. Character—Round or Flat
Terms coined in 1927 by author E.M. Forster to describe character development in a literary work.
4). A “flat” character is one that is barely developed or is stereotypical. It’s harder for the reader to care what happens to him/her in the course of the story.
3). A “round” character
is well-developed, closely involved in and responsive to the action in the story. This is a character that the reader can clearly identify as a main character.

7. Round Characterization
Think of very complex characters that have many sides, traits unpredictable behavior, and a fully developed personality. Protagonists are usually round as are SOME antagonists.

8. Flat Characterization
A character usually limited to one
side—often a stereotype. Flat characters help move the plot along more quickly because the audience immediately understands what the character is about.

9. FLAT VS ROUND
Typically the round character defeats the flat character within a man vs man conflict. This is because the round character somewhere in the story realizes the importance of developing many skills and typically targets a weakness the flat character refuses to develop.

10. Character—Dynamic or Static
5). A dynamic character grows and changes in a significant way throughout the course of the story as he/she reacts to events and other characters. Dynamic characters sometimes experience epiphanies.
6). A static character may face the exact same challenges as the dynamic character, but will remain unchanged USUALLY from selfishness or arrogance.

Many static characters fall because they are unwilling to change; therefore, they succumb to their weakness. However, some authors create static characters as strong figures whose high morals do not falter to the temptations of evil.
