Poetry Terms Know these words!

1. Alliteration Repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of several words of a line of poetry or a sentence

2. Allusion Reference to something the reader more than likely is familiar with, such as a person, place or event from history or literature

3. Exaggeration Obvious stretching of the truth

4. Figurative Language The tools that a poet uses to create a special effect or feeling. It includes, metaphor, simile, alliteration, personification, and onomatopoeia.

5. Free Verse Poetry written without a regular rhyme scheme, meter, or form

6. Idiom A common phrase made up of words that can’t be understood by their literal or ordinary meanings

7. Imagery Language that appeals to the five senses-touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing

8. Lyric Poem Short poem that directly expresses the poet’s thoughts and emotions in a musical way

9. Metaphor A direct comparison between two unlike things. NOT using the words like or as

10. Mood The feeling created by a poem or story for the reader. Words, phrases, repetition, rhyme, and exaggeration all work together to create mood

11. Narrative Poem A poem that tells a story and uses many of the same elements found in a story

12. Onomatopoeia The use of words that sound like they describe
EX: zing, ping, whir, poof, clank, screech, zip, whack, etc.

13. Personification A type of figurative language that gives an animal, object, or idea human qualities, such as the ability to hear, think, feel, talk, and make decisions

14. Repetition To repeat something; sound, word, phrase, or sentence more than once.

15. Rhyme The repetition of similar sounds. End rhyme is the repetition of similar sounds at the end of lines of poetry. Internal rhyme happens within a line when two words have similar sounds.

16. Rhyme Scheme Repeated regular pattern of rhymes usually found at the end of poems.

17. Rhythm The musical quality created by a pattern of beats or a series of stressed and unstressed syllables.

18. Simile Comparison between two things using like or as

19. Stanza A group of lines in a poem set off by blank lines. It usually develops as one idea

20. Symbol Something that stands for something else.

21. Tone The attitude the writer takes toward the audience, subject, or characters

22. Voice Or speaker is the character or perspective that is taken by the writer or poet, often NOT identified by name
