Roosevelt called for his friend and fellow Republican William Howard Taft to run for president. Roosevelt thought that Taft would carry on the progressive Republican agenda. Taft easily gained the Republican nomination, and went on to become president. Can you make a prediction about how Taft’s presidency might go using context clues and inference skills?

Taft supported the 16th Amendment
Taft supported the 16th Amendment. This allowed Congress to tax people’s incomes to collect money for the federal government. In 1913 this was ratified so that high incomes were taxed at a higher rate than lower incomes. Do you believe this is fair, why or why not? (Turn and talk to discuss)
