5th Grade Year Long Goals
Independence -Allow students to complete home learning/projects independently -Making smart decisions when choosing partnerships -Becoming a self-advocate -Students us directly -Going out to lunch in the Spring Organization/ Time Management -Bringing materials to and from home -Using a planner and Home/School Folder regularly to manage materials -Use a timer to self-monitor home learning Confidence -Public speaking opportunities (Morning Meeting Share, Home Learning Share, Constitution Works, Play Writing, Graduation etc.)

Morning Meeting/Work Students must arrive at the auditorium by 8:20. We begin work right away. Morning Meeting-Greeting, Share, Monitor Goals, Quick Connection, Review Schedule Morning Math/Grammar

Reading Students will be reading 30-45 minutes each day in school.
Emphasis on responding to reading through writing and conversation. Develop awareness of the reading strategies they use. We will be reading non fiction throughout the year Partnership Reading & Book Clubs Share thinking Learn conversation skills

Writing Word Study: Emphasis on using published texts as mentors
Writer’s Notebook: Place to collect ideas that may eventually be published Should reflect what students know about conventions of writing Emphasis on using published texts as mentors Units include: ESSAY: personal, literary, persuasive, photo Playwriting (Including Wingspan) Poetry Word Study: Wordly Wise Workbook High Frequency Spelling words Emphasis on grammar & sentence structure

Math Emphasis on efficient problem solving, writing and talking about mathematical processes. Units of Study Include: Multiplication & Division Fractions & Decimals** 2D & 3D Geometry Algebra Data Analysis & Probability Multiplication tables should be mastered

Motivates students Encourages peer collaboration Students get peer & teacher feedback that is meaningful and timely Helps students manage long term projects Great preparation for middle school work

Student Portfolios Include class assignments, assessments, drafts, published work, rubrics, home learning Sent home about once a month with a cover letter to highlight and explain new work Self-Reflection Used to help students set goals & to use as mentors for future assignments. Great way to see progress across the school year. To support students, parents should celebrate personal growth, work ethic, and goal setting
