Polygon vs. Polyhedron POLYGON: A plane shape (two-dimensional) with straight sides. POLYHEDRON: A solid with flat faces (from Greek poly- meaning "many" and -edron meaning "face"). Example: pyramids and prisms

Box 1: 3-Dimensional figures are not flat figures. They have length, width, and height.

Box 2:

A 3D shape with TWO flat bases connected by rectangular faces
Box 3: What is a prism? A 3D shape with TWO flat bases connected by rectangular faces Whatever the flat shapes at the end, determines the type of prism Ex: Triangular prism

A 3D shape with ONE flat base and triangular faces that
Box 4: What is a pyramid A 3D shape with ONE flat base and triangular faces that all meet at ONE point What ever the flat shape at the base is, determines the type of pyramid Ex: Square-based pyramid
14
Box 5: Face: Face is the flat surface Edge: Edge is a line that connects faces together. Vertices: Vertex is a point where edges and or multiple faces meet.

Solid Shapes: (faces, edges, and vertices)

16
Rectangular prism face base edge vertex A rectangular prism has 6 faces, 8 vertices, 12 edges, and 2 bases.
17
face Cube vertex edge A cube, just like a rectangular prism, has 6 faces (all squares), 8 vertices, 12 edges, and 2 bases.
18
Rectangular Pyramid A rectangular pyramid has 5 faces. Its ONE base is a rectangle and the other 4 faces are triangles. It has 8 edges and 5 vertices.
19
vertex Triangular pyramid face base A triangular pyramid has four faces. All faces, including its ONE base, are triangles. It has six edges and four vertices.
20
Triangular prism base base face face vertex
A triangular prism has five faces. Its base is a triangle. (Notice that even when the triangular prism sits on a rectangle, the base is still a triangle.) Two of its faces and the TWO bases are triangles; three of its faces are rectangles. It has six vertices and nine edges.
21
Square pyramid face vertex base
A square pyramid has 5 faces. Its base is a square and the other 4 faces are triangles. It has 8 edges and 5 vertices.

Now it’s your turn! You will see a chart from last year’s 6th grade math class on how well they did on the questions that followed this three-dimensional figures powerpoint presentation
