1 How does temperature change throughout the ocean?
Ocean Temperature How does temperature change throughout the ocean?

2 What we saw The green water (cold) sank to the bottom of the tank
The red water (hot) rose to the top of the tank The blue ice floated at the surface of the water, the blue water from when it the ice melted sank to the bottom. WHY???????

3 Temperature changes density
The density of a material is defined as its mass per unit volume. Different materials usually have different densities an important concept regarding buoyancy So what is actually happening to the molecules?

4 Density predictions maldenmarinebio.wikispaces.com
Gas properties-temperatures affect. Density sinking vs. floating Phet.

5 How does density effect buoyancy?
Blue Yellow Green Red Same Mass Same Volume Same Density In each scenario, rank the blocks from most dense to least dense.

6 How does density effect buoyancy?
Blue Yellow Green Red Same Mass  second biggest  biggest  third smallest Same Volume  6.00kg 8.00kg   4.00kg 2.00kg Same Density Second 3.00kg biggest 4.00kg Smallest 1.00kg In each scenario, rank the blocks from most dense to least dense.

7 Complete the following statements in your notebook.
“When the temperature of molecules increase, the speed that the molecules move _________ therefore, it be comes ________ dense.” “When the temperature of molecules decrease, the speed that the molecules move _________ therefore, it becomes __________ dense.”

9 What we saw The green water (cold) sank to the bottom of the tank

10 Physical Oceanography
Temperature differences create Thermoclines A change in temperature more rapid than depth An invisible blanket separating: the upper mixed layer from the calm deep water below.

12

13 So when does mixing occur?
Mixing churns up stable stratified water, bringing cold water up and forcing warm water down. But when and how? In the winter months, the water column is fully mixed due to the prevalence of winter storms.

14 Once spring comes, the higher temperatures warm the surface waters
decreasing their density stratified layers develop again.

15 Seasonal thermoclines
Can really mix things up…….

16 Thermocline summary Due to density changes
Winter months water mixes well Spring warms surfaceless dense and floats Thermocline begins Summer – strong thermocline Fall – decreased sun, lower temp, storms begin to mix Winter - back to mixed
